I am looking to buy new rims finally and I am lost with the whole wheel offset. I do not understand what it means and I have searched to try and get an understanding but I am still confused. I believe the stock wheel width of an 05 corolla is 6.5" so how big should I go and what offset range should I stay with?
I was quite confused with the offset myself, but let me do my best to explain. Though i do recommend that you find the offset "number" online...there are times that you may have to measure it.
My definition: The offset is the distance (mm) from where the mounting surface of the hub caps to the center line of the wheel. I don't know how else to explain it sorry. I hope this thelps. But the Offset is generally measured in millimeters.
But in all honesty...For me, The offset does not really matter unless you are going to a drag strip and racing, OR if you are upgrading your wheels (which is probably what you're doing) But our Corolla's (03-08) can go up to 17'' wheels without any issues. At 18'' i would be questioning the offset.
Offset has basically nothing to do with the diameter of the wheels, and everything to do with the width of the wheels.
Yes and no. When the diameter gets large enough, you need to pay close attention to the offset to make sure you don't put a tire into the lip of the wheel well.
True, however that will also be an issue of how wide the wheel is, because even with a smaller diameter and a wider wheel then the tire will be pushed into the lip of the wheel well.
In any case, it's all important, that's what you need to know, haha.
Great replies to the thread. It has really helped me understand much clearer. I guess the last thing I would like to know is how thick/wide can the wheels be before my wheels hit the car body when turning?
