Anyone use Moble 1 synthetic atf for their T-IV aft?
So winter here will bring temps of -40 F. Last winter, my first one in that cold with my '05 corolla, it would shift hard and late, and when stopping at an intersection it would want to stall, which i assume is because the fluid is so thick in the torque converter. I switched the power steering fluid, brake fluid and engine oil to synthetic and it made a world of difference in those areas and I want to do the same with the transmission to reduce winter wear and tear but the toyota dealer only sells standard Type-IV aft. I found a Moble 1 synthetic and royal purple fluid that claims to work with Type 4 but was wondering what you thought.
I see no problem with it, as long as you use the correct fluid. Mobil makes a couple of ATFs, find the one that lists T-IV fluid on the back. It should be noted that Toyota considers the fluids compatible with the tranny is the T-IV and the 3309 fluid from Mobil. I use redline in my tranny and had no problems. Don't just do a drain and refill, that gets out 41% of the fluid. 5 drain and refills get out 93% of the fluid, but at a high cost. The best way to exchange the fluid is to do a return line flush, or take it to a tranny shop.
I also swapped out the power steering fluid with synthetic ATF, and I love how it feels in the winter.
Does the power steering fluid take any type of ATF, such as Dexron? Or does it require the T-IV also? How do you exchange that? Remove the return hose and put into a bucket, and keep the reservoir full while exchanging?
I just switched to AMSOIL ATF. I have only put about 350 miles on the new fluid, but so far it is great! In all honesty, I think it shifts about the same, maybe a little smoother.
I have noticed just under a .5 mpg drop in gas mileage however; with that being said, the mornings are getting cooler so it could just be normal seasonal drop too. I also got stuck in a few major traffic jams too during this tank ... I will continue to monitor of course.
I also pulled the negative terminal on the battery for a few hours to clear out the long term transmission log such that the transmission can "relearn" with the new fluid. I have no confirmation that actually works, but folks seem to recommend it in the forums. The worse case scenario is that I had to reset my radio buttons. Anyway, so part of the mpg drop may be my transmission relearning too. For what it is worth, the car is shifting at points where I do not remember it doing so before, for the better.

I believe the PS calls for Dexron III, if I remember correctly, the PS cap may say it too. I followed the DIY for the camry found here:http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t19334.html
Capacity is .9 US quarts.
There used to be pictures with it, which helped out, dont know what happened to them.

I noticed that the PS fluid that comes with the car got pretty dark in a short amount of time. There is no filter on the PS fluid.
The poor mans method is to use a turkey baster to suck it out and refill.

My manual says dex III atf to fill the ps reservoir
got it done. Just going to replace it at every oil change in the hope of eventually getting it all out same with the trans(well every 20,000 miles or so)

the mobil 1 synthtetic atf says on the back of the bottle and on the website that its compatible with type T-IV and JWS 3309. the owners manual says to use either one of those fluids for these model transmissions. i got the mobil atf in my 95 corolla and its awesome. i'm gonna be changing out my mother's 2005 corolla atf with the new mobil 1 atf soon. but essentially JWS 3309 and T-IV are the same fluid from what i understand from reading the manual
I called my Mobil Distributor today and he said the stuff he lists is under a Chrysler atf and that it what he sells to my toyota dealer for their bulk tanks. im gonna go to the stealorship since its only $4.17/qt
Today I drained the old aft out and refilled with 3 quarts Mobil 1 aft synthetic. As I drove off I noticed low speed gear changes were smoother but when you accelerate from a stop to about 3000rpm, the gear change seems very hard and harsh. Second gear change was a lot smoother. I normally use Toyota's Type T I-V fluid but wanted to try out Mobil 1.
Does the hard gear change mean the fluid still needs to be broken in or something bad? Fluid level was checked after a mile drive and cycling thur the gears. It's on the hot mark so the level is correct. I'm not too good with transmissions so any inputs from others would be cool. Thanks
