HIDs and DRLS question -

05 corolla LE 53k miles auto

alright,
ive done a bit of seraching on this forum..

and i would like to get some opinions....
what do we all think the conclusion is...

how does one put hids in and disable the DRLS? without disabling the automatic light function?

or.. how does one make a killswitch for the drls? or does it really not matter?
this is all me. but i feel like i would prefer not to have HID drls running all day... and only at night ey?

what are peoples approaches to this?

i figure a simple relay is not the solution....? or is it..

if you search the corolla section, there should be a write up on how to disable the DRL's. if not, i know they have a write up on it @ 9th gen corolla .com

please dont put HID's in your halogen housings.

why is that? just cuz you think it looks rice? or is there a real hazard? i figured 50 dollars is cheap enough that its worth it... and i only want 4300.. nothing for style... its purely for function...

there is a real hazard for other drivers. when you place HID lights in a housing that is meant for regular halogen bulbs, it throws light all over the place. This will in turn blind oncoming traffic and anyone in front of you.

If you insist on putting HID's in your halogen housings, be courteous enough to re-aim your headlights so they point downwards.

Cool, someone else campaigning to persuade folks to not put HIDs in halogen housings. If you really must have HIDs, put them in projectors. It's very obvious when you see someone with HIDs in their halogen housings, and not in a good way.

HIDS are meant for Projectors
But there are halogen projectors and then there are HID projectors.

Halogen reflectors + HID = dangerous for other drivers and the beam pattern sucks.
Halogen Projectors + HID = Okay, not the best, but doable because of the cutoff shield (that blocks light and glare hitting oncoming traffic) and better beam pattern.

Retrofitted HID projectors = best. Most functional of them all. What they do is, use real hid projectors from other cars like the acura tsx, honda s2000 and put them into headlamps of your choice in this example it would be corolla headlamps. This lets you use HID projectors the way they were supposed to be used with real HID bulbs. (there are differences between real hid bulbs and bulbs meant to work like hid bulbs)

tl;dr

Get retrofitted headlights.

the problem with retrofits is that they are costly, and not worth it until you realize HIDs in any other form suck. but there are companies that do retrofits, and they will help you customize your lights to the way you want them to look for the one of a kind product, my own retrofit is being done right now

What I really like is the overseas Altus HID housings. They're factory reflector housings for D2R bulbs. HIDs were a factory open overseas.

They're pricey, but the only way to go if you want HIDs with factory-looking reflector housings (which I generally prefer over projectors).

I've seen them before, their Native HID reflectors, absolutely no glare, but the thing is, without the weather cap, you'll get all kinds of stuff in the headlights, bugs and condensation. Not only that, they don't give off a wide beam like projectors do.

The balancing motor also doesn't work for us / I haven't found anyone whose gotten it to work here in the US.

For the same price of the headlights, bulbs and ballasts, you could get a retrofit done thats even better than those altis headlamps.

The bulbs and ballasts don't come with the headlights, but if you did get them in the packaged deal, the difference between that and a retrofit at full price is about $100, and at that point a hundred bucks is like nothing for something high quality and has a warranty (depends on who does your retrofit, my retrofitter has a lifetime warranty)

For sure, the reflectors cost more. But I like the look of reflectors on the car more. I never really cared for projectors, though their beam pattern is nice. Have you seen the Altis HID lights in action? Does it have a notched beam pattern, ECE style?

The weather caps should be a non-issue; they're pretty easily available.

the altis hid reflectors have a hard plastic type weather cap, and i can't recall the beam pattern, but on 9thgen there are atleast two people that have them installed

and those reflectors do look great, but, the greater functionality, cost, and customization outweighs the look factor
