I'm new to Toyota's, Mainly have knowledge in hondas. Theres so many different things about my Corolla that I cant really decide where to start looking for this problem...
theres a link to the vid... I have a gut feeling its a rod/main bearing but I have hopes for it being something else. I'm pulling the oil pan off sometime this week to take a look, In the meantime I am NOT driving it.
Please let me know any suggestions as of what else it could be. I'm really not looking to rebuild this thing

Engine 1ZZ-FE?? Correct me if I'm wrong...
Thats some pretty bad sound coming from the engine. Almost sounds diesel powered lol. When you hear knocking sounds first thing you do is to check the oil level. A stethoscope comes in handy to locate where the main sound is coming from. Other than that good luck finding the source to that sound.
I bought it and the woman had just done an oil change. The reciept was in the glove compartment.
Valvoline 10W30 with a valvoline filter maybe? Its almost due for an oil change. 500 Miles away. I'm going to drain the oil and drop the pan tomorrow and take a look around.
Anyone know the torque specs for the connecting rod caps on a 1ZZ-FE?

There is the manual if you want to download it, it has everything you are looking for. Does this noise go away when the car warms up or is it constant?

18ftlbs wow... thats nothing. Btw. Mine is a 2003. that manual is for a 2004 any differences?
No the noise is solid and consistant, cold or hot, any rpm. but it never seems to get louder. no matter what. its quite strange.

Yeah, it will be fine. The 03-08 use the same engine, with very minor changes. I dont think there are any engine changes from 03 to 04. There were some tranny changes though.
I am pretty sure it is 18 ft pounds, double check to make sure.
Engine is specd for 5W-30 oil.
These engines are notorious for crappy belt tensioners and belts. Can you confirm the noise is not the tensioner? It would be something to eliminate.

Cool.
Yea, I'll give that a second look. I'm giving the car a good going over.
Not sure if you saw my last edit, but take a very close look at the tensioner. They suck so much Toyota put out a TSB on it. Dayco makes a nice replacement.
It may be a crank bearing. Sometimes the front crank bearing can get some play in it from being constantly loaded by the belt, and make that sound as it loads and unloads. Certainly try removing the belt all together and see if it makes the noise. If it does, you know it's not the belt or tensioner, and the crank bearings are likely okay as well.
I assume you're chasing the low "thumping" sound. That seems pretty slow to be related to anything on the crank. But it sounds like it's deep enough and low enough physically in the engine that it can't be anything else. Could be something odd like an oil pump.

Well It sounds a bit crazy, But I may have found the source of this sound. Theres a spot on the serpentine belt that doesnt have any ribs on it, and as it passes over the alternator pulley it kinda tracks sideways at the exact time of the noise. Also the noise doesnt change/get louder under load.
I'm goign to pick up a new belt today and see how everything goes lol. I'll kick myself in the ass if it is a belt.
Torque for connecting rod caps is 15ft lbs plus an additional 90 degree or quarter turn. I would check the oil pump pick up tube for any obstructions.

Funny story. The motor was off yesterday, and I happened to see a spot on the serpentine belt that didnt have any ribs... odd. So I started the car and watched the alternator pulley, and every time this spot on the belt went over that pulley, it would make that hollow knocking sound.
So I got a little worked up and concerned since this car is new to me, But I'm happy it was just the belt. I changed the belt (=no fun) by myself and the noise is gone. Thanks to all that posted and helped out.
