07 Corolla rear hub

Ok gang, thanks for all the feedback on my supposed rear brake problem. I no
longer think it is the brakes making the knocking noise when I brake.
This also potentially solves another problem with road noise that I attributed to my tires.
Combining these two symptoms led me to think it might be rear
wheel bearings. I went out to the car and grabbed a hold of the wheel both
from 12 and 6 oclock and 3 and 9 oclock positions and gave them a sturdy wiggle.
There is significant play on both rear wheels. This is telling me I may be replacing both rear hub assemblys.
Bad bearing would explain all my symptoms. Does anyone here have any experience
replacing the rear hub assy on a gen 9 Corolla? What is the degree of difficulty? What price range am I looking at for parts? Is there a video or pictures of this on this site? Any
info at all on this would be greatly apppreciated. I would like to do this job
myself if it is not too difficult or require many special tools.

Very easy, remove the 4-bolts going through the backing plate and the hub& bearing assy pops right off.

Have you actually made this repair? Is it necessary to remove any of the rear brake hardware to do this. It does appear easy but I would like to be aware of any possible
surprises. My car is non-ABS. I would go with aftermarket bearing as the toyota is way too expensive. Hard to believe they would fail this soon but anything is possible.
I've seen prices from 62 to 134 for a hub. are the cheaper ones crap?
Thanks

Other guys are right, the replacement of the rear hub is pretty straight forward and doesn't require you to remove the rear brake assembly.

You should be able to tell if the hub bearing is bad when you raise the wheel off the ground and spin the rear wheel. It should spin freely. If you feel a grinding when you spin the wheel, then it's likely the bearing (unless the rear brake shoes are rubbing).

I just replaced one of my rear hubs a few months ago (165K on the hub) and went with the Timkin brand hub for about $100 at rockauto.com. There are certainly cheaper ones available on Ebay and elsewhere but I wasn't confortable with the quality of those off-brand parts. If you plan to keep your Corolla for a while, I'd invest the extra money and get known quality parts.

One small problem I had removing the old hub was that the old hub kind of stuck inside the backplate of the rear brake assembly. I had to spray some penetrating oil on the hub and knock on the back side of the hub to get it to release from the backplate. It's a little awkward getting the hub to release since the backplate is held by the same four bolts as the hub. As a result, when your removed the four bolts, the plate released as well as the hub from the rear support. Not a big problem but , in my case, made a real easy job a little more complicated.

Good luck.
