Recently I have been hearing a strange noise when taking my foot off the gas...especially when coasting where I am only lightly pressing on the pedal.
This is an '05 with the electronic throttle. Just about to hit 60,000 miles.
The best way I can describe it is like if you were humming, but breathing in. It lasts 1-2 seconds, starts as a low pitch and then gets higher before going away. It's loud enough to hear with the stereo on at low-medium volume.
I don't notice anything wrong with the car while driving, but the noise is concerning. Anyone heard this before, or have any ideas?

Weird, I don't have any clue what that could be if the sound only lasts for a second or two... I would think that this would be engine related by what you described.

What happens if you take it out of "gear"; i.e. put it in neutral when you are coasting down?
And does it stop just about before you come to a stop?
The noise stops even before I normally would step on the brake...it happens immediately after lifting my foot off the gas, especially when I have only been slightly pressing on the pedal, eg: to maintain a steady speed on flat road.
I have not tried putting it into neutral...I'll have to remember to do that while driving tomorrow and see.
I also noticed the noise the other day when I started the car and put it into reverse, without me ever touching the gas...this is pointing me in the direction of the transmission.
At 60,000 miles I still have what I assume to be the original fluid (I got the car at 31,700 and you can bet the dealer didn't change it). However the fluid still looks to be in good condition. It is more red than brown in color, and in no way smells burnt. I am thinking about changing the fluid anyway, just because...
Thoughts?

well, I do have also a 2007 sienna minivan, which developed a noise every time the car "pushed" the engine (downhill, coasting etc).
Turned out to be a defect in the transmission.
The noise went immediately away when put in neutral while in this push mode, or just about before the car came to a stop ( the tranny automatically dis-engages).
While I do not know what exactly the problem was, they exchanged the entire transmission under warranty.
I sure hope your noise does not turn out that way.
My noise does go away almost immediately...far before I come to a stop. But I do have just under 40,000 miles of warranty left, and wouldn't exactly mind a new transmission! LOL.
Only problem is the Enterprise that the dealer gets their loaners from would have a horrible base model red Chevy Cobalt with my name on it...
It is reassuring to hear that others have this same noise. I've just never heard it in a car before, and so far as I can tell, nothing is malfunctioning. Just if it is a problem, I want to make sure its taken care of while I have a warranty.

I have not solved the noise issue. I am now also experiencing it sometimes when braking for a while and coming to a stop (eg: highway offramp). I am also now noticing a significant drop in RPM's when the noise occurs, and a lower idle RPM all the time.
Many others have noted that the intake manifold on the 1ZZ engine is known for having a leaky gasket, which causes engine vacuum issues. Since the noise now happens with brake use, that leads me to believe that the gasket may be the issue.
I plan to have the dealer look at the gasket when the ECU gets replaced in November...unless it causes stalling before then.
Supposedly, if you disconnect your battery for 15-20 minutes, which clears the ECU's memory, and experience stalling immediately following that, then the intake manifold gasket is your problem. The computer is able to 'learn' what it has to do to compensate for the leaky gasket over time. I suppose one of these days I'll get around to doing that. I now have just under 15k miles of warranty left.
