9th Gen Toyota Corolla Maintenance Guide

9th Gen Toyota Corolla Maintenance Guide

This is my elaborated Maintenance Service guide combining both the (2005) Toyota Corolla Owner’s Manual and the (2005) Owner’s Manual Supplement, with a few minor modifications to the writing. I hope that it will solve any question that may arise if you are wondering about servicing your 9th Gen Toyota Corolla, or plan to service it yourself! Special Operating Conditions are at the very bottom.

Note: This is only from the Toyota Corolla Owner’s Manual and Owner’s Manual Supplement. Stuff like when to change your brake pads, rotors, power steering fluid change ext… is not covered or mentioned in either of these booklets and therefore is not mentioned in this guide.

Note: DIY links must be done on the 9th Gen Toyota Corolla with a 1ZZ-FE or 2ZZ-GE engine and on the Toyota Nation forums; neither generic DIY guides nor other Toyota model DIY guides will be posted to this thread nor will guides from other websites. The reason for this is so that you can be assured that we have actually performed the stated service to our 9th Gen Toyota Corollas safely. DIY guides will incorporate pictures, information, and tips to help you along with your own service to your 9th Gen Toyota Corolla. If you have any questions or concerns about a DIY please post it in the respected guide. Work Safe!

I hope you will learn something from reading this, and use it to your advantage as well as help other 9th Gen Corolla owners.

EVERY 6 MONTHS/8,000 KM (5,000 MI): LUBRICATION

Replace engine oil & filter:

Toyota Nations Do it Yourself Guide for a engine oil change (2ZZ-GE): http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh....php?p=2928884

Engine oil selection

Oil grade: API grade SL “Energy-Conserving” or ILSAC multigrade engine oil.
Recommended viscosity: SAE 5W-30

SAE 5W-30 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. If SAE 5W-30 oil is not available, SAE 10W-30 oil may be used. However, it should be replaced with SAE 5W-30 at the next oil change.

Checking the engine oil level

Oil quantity between high and low marks on the oil dipstick.
Oil quantity, L (qt., Imp. qt.):
1ZZ-FE engine: 1.3 (1.4, 1.1)
2ZZ-GE engine: 1.5 (1.6, 1.3)

Engine Lubrication

Oil capacity (drain and refill),
L (qt., Imp. qt.):

1ZZ-FE engine
With filter 3.7 (3.9, 3.3)
Without filter 3.5 (3.7, 3.1)

2ZZ-GE engine
With filter 4.4 (4.8, 4.0)
Without filter 4.2 (4.6, 3.8)

OIL FILTER

Remove & inspect air filter element (replace when required).

Inspect the air filter element as scheduled and replace at least every 48,000km (30,000mi), visually check for accumulated dirt or damage. Clean with compressed air.

Lubricate locks, latches & hinges.

Inspect lights, horn & wipers for proper function

Toyota Nations Do it Yourself Guide for Replacing the Headlight Low Beam Bulb: DIY Headlight (Low Beam) Bulb Change

If the headlights or other electrical components do not work, check the fuses. If any of the fuses are blown they must be replaced.

Turn the ignition switch and inoperative component off. Pull the suspected fuse straight out and check it.

If the fuse has blown, push a new fuse into the clip.

If the fuse blows again, your car has an electrical problem.

Replacing light bulbs (2005)

Light bulb | bulb# | W | Type
Headlights (High beam) | 9005 | 65 | A
Headlights (Low beam) | 9006 | 55 | B
Front turn signal lights | 3157A | 27/8 | C
Front fog lights | 9006 | 55 | B
Side marker/Tail lights | 3157 | 27/8 | D
*Rear turn signal lights | 3157A | 27/8 | C
Back up lights | 921 | 18 | D
High mount stoplight | 921 | 18 | D

A: HB3 halogen bulbs
B: HB4 halogen bulbs
C: Wedge base bulbs (amber)
D: Wedge base bulbs (clear)

*Some Corolla models may take a Clear wedge base bulb rather than Amber wedge base bulb for the rear turn signal lights. 2003-2004?

Inspect coolant, brake & washer fluid levels:

Checking the engine coolant

Look at the see-through coolant reservoir when the engine is cold. The coolant level is satisfactory if it is between the “FULL” and “LOW” lines on the reservoir. If the level is low, add the coolant. For coolant type, see below.

Use of improper coolants may damage your engine cooling system.

Only use "Toyota Super Long Life Coolant" or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, and non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology. (Coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology is a combination of low phosphates and organic acids.)

For the U.S.A.- “Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 50% coolant and 50% deionized water. This coolant provides protection down to about -35C (-31F).

For Canada- “Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 55% coolant and 45% deionized water. This coolant provides protection down to about -42C (-44F).

Checking the brake fluid

To check the fluid level, simply look at the see-through reservoir. The level should be between the “MAX” and “MIN” lines on the reservoir.

If the level is low, add SAE J1703 or FMVSS No.116 DOT 3 brake fluid to the brake reservoir.

Inspect tires and adjust pressure as required

The following instructions for checking tire inflation pressure should be observed:

The pressure should be checked only when the tires are cold
Always use a tire pressure gauge
Take special care when adding air to the compact spare tire
Do not bleed or reduce tire inflation after driving
Never exceed the vehicle capacity weight

Tire size and cold tire inflation pressure

kPa (kgf/cm2 or bar, psi): Front and Rear pressures are the same for all 9th Gen Corolla models.
(Corolla CE) P185/65R15 86S: 210 (2.1, 30)
(Corolla LE, S) P195/65R15 89S: 210 (2.1, 30)
(Corolla XRS) P195/55R16 87V: 220 (2.2, 32)
Compact spare tire T125/70R16 96M: 420 (4.2, 60)

Wheel nut torque

EVERY 12 MONTHS/16,000 KM (10,000 MI): SERVICE

ALL OF THE ABOVE WITH THE FOLLOWING ADDED

Inspect coolant, brake, washer fluid & automatic transmission fluid levels:

To inspect the automatic transmission fluid level, start the engine and keep the transmission in Park. Pull the transmission dipstick out, wipe, insert, and pull back out.

Inspect the transmission fluid level when it is either cold or hot. There are dedicated zones on the transmission dipstick for those temperatures. If the transmission fluid is low add only Toyota Genuine ATF Type T-IV, ATF (JWS3309 or NWS6500).

Notice: Using automatic transmission fluid other that “Toyota Genuine ATF Type T-IV” may cause deterioration in shift quality, locking up of your transmission accompanied by vibration, and ultimately damage the automatic transmission of your vehicle

Replace air conditioner interior dust & pollen filter (cabin air filter).

Toyota Nations Do it Yourself Guide for replacing the air conditioner filter: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh....php?p=2793383

Inspect drive belts for damage. Adjust belt tension if required.

Inspect for cracks, excessive wear or looseness. Replace any damaged belt. Check belt tension and adjust as necessary.

Inspect steering gear box, linkage and suspension parts for looseness, damage or leakage.

Inspect the steering gear box for signs of leakage.

Inspect the steering linkage with the vehicle stopped and check for excessive freeplay in the steering wheel. Check the linkage for bending or damage. Replace any damaged parts.

Checking power steering fluid

Check the fluid through the reservoir. If necessary, add automatic transmission fluid DEXRON II or III.

Steering Wheel Free Play:

Less than 30mm (1.2 in.)

Inspect ball joints & dust covers, steering rack boots, chassis nuts & bolts for looseness or damage.

Check the suspension, steering and steering linkage ball joints for looseness or damage. Check all dust covers for deterioration or damage.

Retighten the seat mounting bolts and front and rear suspension member retaining bolts to specified torque.

Inspect brake linings, drums, pads, discs, lines and hoses.

Check brake linings and drums, pads and discs for scoring, burning, leaking fluid, broken parts, excessive wear or run-out.

Visually check brake lines and hoses for proper installation. Check for chafing, cracks, deterioration or any leakage. Replace any deteriorated or damaged parts immediately.

5-15 (0.2-0.6)

Fluid type: SAE J1703 or FMVSS No.116 DOT 3 brake fluid.

Inspect exhaust system for leaks or damage.

Visually inspect the exhaust pipes, muffler and hangers for cracks, deterioration or damage. Start the engine and listen carefully for any exhaust leakage. Tighten connections or replace parts as necessary.

Rotate tires

Toyota Nations Do it Yourself Guide for a tire rotation: DIY Tire Rotation

To equalize the wear and help extend tire life, Toyota recommends that you rotate the tires every 16,000km (10,000mi) or sooner for your Toyota Corolla.

Rotation placement
D (Drivers side), P (Passengers side)
F (Front), R (Rear)

DF to DR
DR to DF

PF to PR
PR to PF

Examine tires for damage or wear. Check & adjust pressure, including spare.

See Inspect tires and adjust pressure as required above plus:

Checking your Tires

Check the tire’s tread for tread wear indicators. If the indicators show, replace the tires. The location of the tread wear indicators is shown by the “TWI” marks, molded on the sidewall of the tire. When the tread depth wears to 1.6mm the indicators will appear.

The effectiveness of snow tires is lost if the tread wears down below 4mm (0.16in.).

If you have tire damage such as cuts, splits, cracks deep enough to expose the fabric, or bulges indicating internal damage, the tire should be replaced.

Any tires which are over 6 years old must be checked by a qualified technician even if damage is not obvious

Road Test

@NMGeorge it's been stickied on TN 9th Gen Corolla DIY guide list at the very top of the list.

@Slaander this is for those that are lazy/didn't want to join Club Toyota... I hope it will serve as a quick check guide for us at TN and anyone wondering about basic maintenance intervals and maintenance +specifications on there 9th Gen Toyota Corolla.

As I stated before "I hope you will learn something from reading this, and use it to your advantage as well as help other 9th Gen Corolla owners". I believe that we should familiarize ourselves with our Corollas. Knowledge such as this will keep any car running for a long time; a Corolla a very long time.

Here's a quick reference chart that the service manager uses at my local Toyota dealership. Sorry for the poor quality. It is a scan of a photocopy.

In the 2006 models, made after February 2006 - they increased the oil capacity on the engines, as well as recommend the switch to 5W-20 motor oil. No worries, same engine, same sump capacity - different dipstick markings. Stick with the fluid capacities and oil weights as recommended by your owner's manual - unless you plan on running an extended oil change, etc. In that case - you are monitoring (or should be monitoring) oil quality carefully, so you can deviate from the manufacturer's recommendation.

Awesome post!!

So I guess none of the maintenance schedules have a check for alignment?? That means, you have to explicitly ask them to check and correct the alignment?
