I looked up fuel pumps at Rock Auto, and they list ones that appear to be different from yours, and they say "Except Japan built". Your Corolla may be built in Japan and require a different pump. If the first character in the VIN is a "J", it was built in Japan.

Rock Auto does not list a pump for a Corolla built in Japan. It may be a dealer-only item.

yeah thats the only difference i've been seeing. and the one you seen is probaly like all the ones i've seen. but the vin stats with an "I" so i don't think that's it.

The Corolla VIN's start with one of the following:

1N - NUMMI plant in California
2T - Canada
JT - Japan

I'm assuming you read the 1 as an I.

There was an issue with some of these cars having starting problems, and a revised fuel pump was released for those cars affected.

Perhaps you have the revised pump and received the original design, or received the revised pump and your fittings are for the original...just a thought.

so i checked with the dealer and they said that they dont sell only the pump but the whole assembly. and it cost $980. which is ridiculous. is there a way the new pump can be modified to fit or the fitting changeed to fit? or can a fuel pump be repaired?

Just prior to my 36,000 miles (literally ... 35K and change) , my fuel pump went on my 05 auto Corolla CE. With a friend, we towed it to a Toyota dealership, put a note on the window, saying "I think its the fuel pump, fix it".

The dealer called the next day confirming that it was indeed the fuel pump and in a few days I had my car back (they had to order the part if memory serves) ... with no money out of my pocket!

Currently at 60k miles and still going strong ...

Edit:

Yikes $1K! I just saw that! I am certainly glad mine died when it did!
