USA Engine and Transmission Mounts

Anyone had to replace your Mounts? If so what were some of the problems you encountered while driving? A bad engine mount vs a bad transmission mount what are the differences a driver will feel? My Corolla is an 04 with + - 60k.Also, what is the normal wear time on these items? Thanks...

So far, they're all good on my Corolla (well, I guess they are). I've never had to change an engine mount on any vehicle I've owned. My '97 Dodge Dakota has 176,000 miles on the original mounts.

As long as the mounts are installed correctly they really should not have to be replaced. Rust could be a problem on much older cars, but not on a 04. Also, I'm really not sure if you could feel a clear difference between a transmission and engine mount just by driving. You would have to get the car up on a lift and properly inspect each individual mount.

Is your car making an abnormal sound or vibrating?

One way to check engine mounts condition is to put the car in drive. Handbrake on and someone in the car. Have him press on the brakes hard and ask him to rev the engine slightly. The engine will flex on its mounts. Put the car in reverse and do the same thing. Engine will flex the opposite way then in drive. If you see excessive movement then one or more of the mounts could be going bad.

One time I've seen a 93 Maxima the mounts were so bad that it looked like the engine was gonna fly out towards you. The owner eventually changed them and it was much better after.

No abnormal sound, but there is a vibration that I feel the moment the car is started and in park and the vibration carrys over when I drive.

I'll try that when my son stops by this week end. I did have to change a motor mount on my previous FORD but that was at 165k back in 1987. At 60k my car is still new...

mrsep48, what oil are you running and whens the last time you changed it? I thought I'd ask because my XRS was starting to get some really good vibrations at idle after some cold starts. I threw 5W-30 Amsoil in it... and it still vibrates a little bit, but the vibrations have gone down alot. Just a thought!

Just changed the oil and filter this past week-end. While under warranty Toyota did the service using what they offer in their shop. My next change will be using Castrol or Pennzoil. The vibration to me feels like the mounts since I never felt the engine vibrate... I'll post more on this latter.
