starter longivity?????

2003 vibe was making starter noises. now 2004 corolla is doing the same thing. when turn the key to start the car after the motor starts the starter keeps on turning for about 1 second. the vibe cured itself. we did have a cold front arrive. could it be connected? it seems strange that both cars "bendix,pinion gear" would go out at almost the same time. any help appreciated.

Did you splash through any puddles before the cold front arrived?
If so, and problem persists, try aiming a hair dryer at starter for 15 minutes.
