2003 Corolla, Spiral Cable/Airbag

About a month ago the airbag light on my 03 Corolla would not shut off. Took it to the dealer and they said it was a "computer glitch" and shut it off. Last Friday it came back on. Went back to the dealer, and they diagnosed a "short in the spiral cable". Parts and labor estimate was about $450 to repair. Does this seem reasonable? If I don't get it fixed, will the airbag not engage if car is in an accident? Is this a known problem with this year and model? Thanks.

ouch, $450? you can buy another set air bag and sit belt at ebay. and I am talking about the whole set not the little cable.

and if they are talking about cable I hope is this one, and that is only $17 compare to $450

The second link is the clock spring plug. What it sounds like Toyota is saying is it's the actual clock spring itself ("spiral cable") that is bad. $450 with parts and labor is probably what you'd pay to have a dealer repair it. Those clock springs are not cheap.
