headlight lens cover "melted

Has anyone ever seen or experienced a headlight lens cover that appears to have gotten too hot on the inside and melted to the point where the outside of the lens bubbled out??

Are you sure that you are not parking near a heat source? A while ago I heard about someone parking at an indoor parking facility where a heat vent blasted down on his right front fender. He returned three days later to discover that the headlight cover was distorted, as well as the bumper cover.

The bubbling you see if a solvent attack. What year is your car? There are a few ways that can happen.

1 - Applying clearcoat paint on the headlights
2 - Using a urethane based headlight restoration product on your lens
3 - Using a polish / wax containing mineral spirits (wax act as a temp sealant)

There are literally over 50 products on the market that will screw up the lens of the headlights because they all either use an urethane based product or something containing a solvent that gets trapped and beings to eat away at the polycarbonate lens.

Here is the good news, problems like this can be fixed if approached early, the bubbling will get worse over time and get deeper to the point where you can't fix the problem anymore. Resurface the lens with any headlight restoration kit using the 3M only $15 online. Then you can just repolish it every 3 months when needed. Just stay away from those headlight restoration kits that use a coating.

This is because of our stupid "daytime running light" feature.

As user above stated get some stuff from Autozone for this. Should come out with no problem. If your refering to the condensation from the rain getting inside your headlights then thats a whole diffrent story and a royal PIA.

I use Meguier's headlight polish on my two vehicles, and it does a phenomenal job. Apply with a small sponge in a light circular fashion, and then buff with an orbital polisher. Wipe off with a clean cloth, and repeat treatment. They are a clear as a bell!

Thumbs up Bump: EXCELLENT Info!

THANKS!!! I'm an Admin/Mod over at a different type of board. I hate it when punks provide "stupid"/why-say-anything answers. Karma - these punks will have the same thing happen to them down the road and will not remember this post. They'll get to ask the same question and have some dummy tell them they're stupid - LOL.

Your answer was extremely helpful and makes perfect sense regarding the solvents. I shyed away from the "simpler" products such as Mequier's for the 4-step 3m process.
