Overheating?

My 2006 runs at one tick below midpoint on the thermometer, city or highway at any outdoors temperature. Is that too high?

I also noticed that while waiting at the lights, the fan kicks in every 30 sec for 4-5 seconds.

What could it be??? Is that normal? How hot/cool are you running?

Thanks!!!

That's normal. If you look at the temperature gauge, it's not to "red" until almost all the way to the top. Your car is operating as designed.

The defrost setting on the Corolla runs the AC and this kicks on the fan every thirty seconds or so. I avoid this setting unless you need it as it sucks about 3 mpg off my mileage.

Mine runs at 1 tick below halfway too, and my scanguage tells me the Water temperature is 184 degrees. Perfectly fine.

What do you mean by "defrost setting" and how it can possibly ran A/C (since A/C is for cooling, not heating, right?) and how do you avoid it?

Many, if not most cars (including the Corolla) do engage the A/C while in Defrost. The idea is that warm DRY air works the best in defrosting the windshield. Hence the A/C runs to dry the air and the heater warms it up. it's really not that uncommon and works great. But as others have posted, it cuts into your mileage.

It's not too hard to disable though and provides you the driver the ability to make that decision. The method to do so has been posted here and other forums if you are interested.

I spent a while searching for a solution for corolla on forums, but got pretty much nothing. Could anyone please point me to a solution on how to decouple A/C from defrost? I also stumbled upon someone mentioning CBEST (or C-BEST) options -- is re-programming of A/C behavior possible by a dealer?

I'm getting embarrassing mileage out of my corolla right now... around 9L/100km and I suspect this a/c thing contributing to it -- always running defrost + low + max heat.

To keep the AC from kicking on, don't keep the airflow controls on the two rightmost settings on the dial unless you have a fogged windshield.

Can you be more specific?
Are you talking about the left dial and its two rightmost positions?
What about the heat level (right dial), does it matter?
What about setting blower to none (middle dial, leftmost position)? Does it do the job?

Thanks!

If you have it on the defrost windshield setting the ac compressor will always be on no matter if the ac button is on or off.

Yes. The left dial (mode selection), in the defrost mode or in the defrost/floor mode, the air conditioning compressor runs.

The temperature selection doesn't matter. Cold or hot, the compressor runs in either of the two defrost modes.

That would be the one exception. Turning the blower to off turns the whole system off. So yes, running with the blower off will keep the compressor from running.
