Craziest thing happened this week. My mom and I both bought new corollas in October of 07 and they both have similar mileage. Mine has 52k and her's has 55k. We have had quite a cold snap here in Notre Dame, Indiana and she started her car up the other day the check light came on and code read that the engine was running to lean. She took it to the dealer and they replaced the intake manifold gasket which I guess was a common problem. This was on Monday. Today, Thursday, I started my corolla to come home from work and the same light came on!!!! What the heck? Are they programmed to go off after a certain length of ownership or something??? Just quite a coincidence I suppose.
Anyways, since I know what the problem is (most likely) I am quite handy in the garage and want to tackle this myself to save the $200 she paid earlier this week. I found the TSB from Toyota on this issue and directions however they recommend draining the coolant. Is this really necessary???
If anyone has done this repair recently and could give me some tips I would greatly appreciate it!!

intake manifold should take about an hour tops to replace. I just replaced mine and it took me 45 min and im supercharged

Don't assume that the check engine light is for an intake manifold gasket. Get the code read first before you do anything. It could be a bad gas cap. Lots of possibilities here.

Had the same problem last month, mine is 05 with 120K km on it. My reading code was P0171 Fule Injection Leak, many ppl, including the mechanic, say that it might be MAF sensor or Intake manifold gasket. I did the MAF clean myself, it came back on 2 days after it, but then it's off by itself, till now. I had a post above asked this question. Hope it helps.

Toyota puts a preventive service marker on all their cars, this means when brand new they will activate the MIL for engine service just to bring it in to the dealer. Roughly around 50k miles it will do this again.
Try this to reset the ECU, clearing the codes:
1. with the car off, press and hold the mileage reset button.
2. with the reset button HELD, start the car
3. with the reset button still held, you will notice your mileage will mark 5 or 6 dashes ( - ) and they will go disapearing.
Ex:
( - - - - - )
( - - - - )
( - - - )
( - - )
( - )
4. once they have all gone away, release the reset button, and your MIL should be off.

Note: if it is a problem that actually needs attention, it will come back on within 3 - 5 minutes depending on the problem.

Thats too much of a coincidence. I had the exact same exp.

Toyota Corolla 2006.
Mileage : ~52K
Check Engine light on..
Code came as P0171 : System is too lean <bank1>
Took it to toyota dealer.

He said they have to replace Intake manifold gasket.
Cost: $180

I asked about the MAF sensor. He said that was not it.
I dont believe him. New to the area. This was the first time i was going to this dealer.

I should have reset the code and see if comes back again.
