Engine light came on about a month ago, went to garage, mechanic told me might be MAF, and he turned the light off. A week later light came back on again, mechanic turned light off, no charge both time, he told me again, might be MAF or vaccume leak. Lately it came back on for the 3rd time, but after several times starts, it disappeared itself. But I want to solve this problem for good, so I searched online, many said the same as the mechanic. I learnt to clean the MAF 2 days ago. However, it's on again today while ideling, car is warm at the time. I don't feel obvious power loose when accelerating, so Do I need to clean MAF again or there is really somewhere leaks?? Thanks for help!!
What year is your car and is it still under warranty? Sounds like a leaky intake manifold gasket. Spray carb cleaner around intake manifold gasket and check if RPM increases.
thanks guys! Appreciated!
Sorry I forgot to mention, my car is 05 corolla, not under warrantee.
BTW, where is autozone? I'm in ottawa, Canada. I never seen one around my area.
My 2003 has the same CEL problem for more than One year.
Mechanic said that it does not matter if not fixing soon. It is only on in the winter time. I have to fix it recently because of emission test to be passed in two weeks. BTW, my car vibrates a little bit when idling sometimes.
I went to one Mechanic for the check with charging $75.00 and got the following result: code: P0170 some problem with B1 and S1 oxygen sensor and MAF sensor. I need to change both of these and drive more than 50 miles to see if the problem fixed or not. If not, have to try to change other parts. very costly to fix. I read a lot from this forum and decide to try myself.
I clean the MAF sensor with the MAF sensor cleaner without any help.
Could any one help with this costly fixing? How to pass the emission test with the CEL on?
I ended up having to replace the MAF. its 160 from autozone, but you get 80 back when you hand back in your old one. its called a core charge. pretty sweet.

Thank you.
If it is only in the winter time, it is likely the gasket. You cannot legally pass inspection with a CEL on. If you do not want to spend the money on a gasket, you could wait until it warms up a bit and the CEL goes off.
As far as the MAF cleaner, it cannot hurt and the can of cleaner is only $7. Make sure you disconeect the negative battery terminal before you clean it. Make sure you are cleaning the MAF wire and not just the IAT sensor. If you do disconnect the battery, you will have to wait to do the emissions testing needing a certain number of driving cycles/miles to perform the test.
I got CEL (P0171) also the other day, same problem as last year. It comes on when the temp. drops approx. from -10 and below and i didn't warmed up the engine before driving off. I also noticed that if I plugged the block for at least an hour in the morning before starting in the morning when temp. drops to -20, no problem at all it won't come on.
Thanks for the info. guys. My mechanic said the same, not to worry too much about it. For the emission test, I'm in Ottawa, I passed it with my old before and it has CEL on all the time since I bought it.
Guys,
IF you get CEL and or rough idle after car has had a cold soak it is most likely intake manifold gasket.
See TSB below for details. Fixed mine last winter for parts cost of $5.56 and a few hours of my labor.
update:
I brought my car to Toyota dealer. They check everything: no any code or any problem found. They cleaned my MAF again. They said that it may be the problem of feul trim. Anyway, they did charge me. One day later and the dealer did emmission test for me and passed!
So far no engine light on. But it seems still some jerk/rough shaking when car is idling in front of the red light. I think Mikered30 is right. I will change Gasket in the future. But I don't know how.
