Michelin's X-Ice Xi2 is a highly-rated winter tire.

^^Yup. Toyota actually has a block heater, it goes into a cavity in the engine, doesnt actually touch coolant. You can get a magnetic block and oil heater, but are probably looking for something more permanent.

I would also change the oil to a synthetic 0w-30, change the power steering fluid to a syn auto tranny fluid and change the tyranny fluid to synthetic. And of course a good waxing wont hurt.

Also might want to get the battery tested.

Canada I just bought a new set of the

Michillen X-ice 2 tires and I find they are amazing on ice. But if you want a cheaper tire I would go with the goodyear nordic tires. You can get them for about $60-$70 cheaper per tire but you don't have the performance on ice but you do have a better performance in deep snow. I drive mostly in the city so I bought the x-ice. If you live in the country or in your case alaska. I don't know the conditions up there in the sence of how much city driving you will be doing. But if you want to get out of deep snow I would say the nordic's.
