Cold weather idling issue: Tach bounces up and down
I just picked up a 2006 corolla ce (5 spd) about 3 weeks ago and so far I love it. Haven't had any issues with the car so far. It has 80000km (about 50000 miles) on it and is super clean.
The concern I have is with the idling in cold weather. I live in Ottawa and lately we've been getting some cold weather with day time highs in the minus double digits. When I start the car it will idle more loudly than normal, usually between 1500 - 2100 rpm depending on how cold it is.
The concern I have is when I'm coasting. For example if I'm driving at a moderate pace (say 40km/h or higher) and I coast (engaging the clutch all the way down) my way to a stop... as I'm coasting, the tach needle will bounce up and down softly until the vehicle comes to a complete stop! The needle usually bounces in a range between 400-800rpm but I have seen it bounce up and down as much as a 1000 rpm for a second or 2 if the engine is really cold and its frigid outside... Basically the colder it is, the worse it is and longer it lasts. Once the engine is warm enough the tach will not bounce at all but it usually takes between 4-8 minutes for the engine to warm up enough.
Yeap im experiencing the same thing, and rough idle. Plus the p0300 code came up and it says cylinder missfire anyone help please i think it is the fuel injectors dirty

Anyone else experience this??
Yeah, the same here. I live in ottawa too!! We have some cold weather here, and I think it is normal. Sometimes it still does it after 5 minutes drive. My advise is when u start drive away, try not to hit the gas too much, speed up slowly, try to keep the rpm below 2000, till the car is completely warm, i think this is good for the car and the transmission.
hey guys, i think i found the problem. it is the gasket on the intake manifold. Wanted to go buy one toyota said they have a backorder list of 1000 just at that dealership. Should be replaced because the car is running rich not and the o2 sensor will go and the catilic convertor will get claughed. Had to replace both, good it was under warranty.
it happens to me too. I'm in Toronto and these days it happens when temperature is below -10 deg C. It looks odd while the rpm needle dancing up and down. I don't know why people are saying, it's normal.
So......... Quite a few people who live in cold climates seem to experience this, so is it normal or not??? And would the culprit be the gasket on the intake manifold? Is this a DIY job or and easy/cheap fix??
For my corolla MAF is clean. I also noted sometime exhaust appears to be like a diesel smelled. Although my car has only 60,000kms. Is that lean mix issue related to the intake manifold gasket issue.
Where is that located. Can someone show on a picture.
Thanks.

It is normal if the fan and rear window defrost were on during winter (turn the fan and defrost off to see the rpm, if it is stable then it is normal).
never affected by keeping fan and defrost off.
but the mystery is that, it happens not everytime, but at specific temperature below minus which may be below -10 deg C.
Guys,
Take a look at this TSB below. If codes and or rough idle are happening after car has had cold soak, it is most likely the intake manifold gasket. I relpaced mine early this year and fixed problem for $5.56 and a few hours labor.
