From what I understand, A staggered setup is good for RWD cars.
This is because the power comes from the rear, so if you have wider tires in the back, there is more traction, thus negating some oversteer (the back tires loose traction before the front..
The reson that you want to have slimmer tires in front, is to help with your responsiveness since there is less to turn. (also cust down on weight.
This does not matter on the corolla since we have FWD, and we natually understeer. (meaning our front tires will loose traction before the rear.)
On the question if a tire bigger than 16 inches will cut your suspension life in half, I call bull. It may cause premature wearing because you have less rubber to absorb the impact, but I dont believe that it will cut the life by 1/2.
I plan on putting 17x7 205/40-17 inch wheels on my 8th gen.
As for weight of wheels, the lighter the better, but also remember, that the lighter a wheel is, the less strength it has as well. (generally, as there are exceptions)
