04 Corolla Gear Shifting and RPM

I drive a 04 Corolla 105K miles, i had my transmission fluid flushed at jiffy lube at about 50K miles... and recently i have been feeling that when driving on a highway at 70 MPH my RPM stays constantly at 3 if i go down to 60MPH it will go to about 2 - 2.2 RPM. However, if i go from 70MPH to 90MPH the gear does not shift, it stays at 3 - 3.5 RPM... Is this Normal???

There have been times (once every month or so) that If i start driving my car the RPM at 40 MPH would be at 3, if i go to 50 MPH, it would go to 4 and never shift and eventually i would have to stop my car on the shoulder, turn off and turn back on for it to be normal.

Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong??? I had my ECU replaced at about 60K miles under manufactures warranty.

I think your highway RPMs are pretty OK. The above quoted part is unusual and I don't know what is the reason for that.

Simple answer is you only have 4 gears in an automatic. Therefore, at highway speeds at 90 mph, the 4th gear will sart to close in on 4000 rpm.

On the contrary, a 5 speed manual Corolla has a taller 5th gear that allows for more relaxed rpms at 90 mph and would be around 2800 - 3000 rpm.

My wife called me yesterday in a panic with the same exact behavior on her 2004 Corolla LE with 120,000 miles. It definitely wasn't a matter of not shifting to overdrive. Her car would not shift out of 2nd gear until she restarted it. She said the tach "was over 5000 rpms" at 60mph and the car required more gas to keep it there. When she would let off the gas, engine braking would slow the car much quicker than normal (thus, not a trans slipping issue). Anyone else have any thoughts? I'm hoping its something simple and not a pending transmission failure. :/

well first off i would get a tanny flush if anything then see if the problem persists....... then all it could be is a part slowly wearing out that most likley can be replaced...... my corolla is normally in 3rd at 40 unless im driving REALLLY slow then it goes into 4th...... but then again i am an agressive driver..... and noted i forgot where i reseached it.... the 1zz-fe( engine in the s or below models, not the xrs) can run indefinatly at 4000 rpms without damaging the engine if the car is at normal operating temprature.... just as a little bit of info there.......

ohh adn if you take care of your car , you will eventually ahve it so long youll get bored of it lol...... darn corollas lasting till your childrens, children can drive them!!!! lol 2012 if the ft-86 comes out im getting that and the corolla will stay in the garage for long trips lol....... ft-86 outside... i love my corolla too much lol......

ohh and for the car not shifting the cutoff points are at 30,70, and 105 if im not mistaken....... from 2nd to1st, 3rd to 2nd, and 4th to 3rd respectivly...... so if you give it enough gas it should shift from 4th to 3rd at 70mph.....
