CEL Code P2610: MYSTERY...HELP

So I get a check engine light the other day. I hook up my OBDII reader and out comes code P2610. Apparently it's for "ECM/PCM Internal Engine Off Timer Performance- rare code."

Everywhere I read it basically says I need to replace the ECM. Also, everywhere I read, whenever people have experienced a bad ECM it's associated with the car just powering off, dying. There seems to be significant problems with the car's functionality when the ECM is bad.

Here's the mystery......this car runs PERFECT! PERFECT idle, everything is smoooooooth. I just drove it 65 miles to work in stop and go and freeway riding at a consistant 85mph for miles and miles. No problem whatsoever.

So for fun I swapped in a new PCV valve (needed it bad), thoroughly cleaned off the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner, cleaned out the throttle body/butterfly, made sure my gas cap was tight, cleared the code and it came back. I cleared the codde again this morning and 65 miles later or one time turning onthe car...so far no code.

How can I get a P2610 code, saying the ECM is having problems and have NO manifestation of problems whatsoever?

Is this for a 9thgen corolla or the one in your sig? The repair should be covered under the EPA emissions extended warranty on this part for 8yr/80K miles, depending on your vehicle.

It's for a 2005 Corolla...thanks for the reminder. And I don't qualify because they extended it to 96 months or 80,000 miles. I have 134,000 miles now. So it looks like I need to buy one and swap it in myself.

OF COURSE the dealer says they have no record of code P2610. LOL

no, no specific thoughts, i'd just like to know what the freeze frame data is, basically i wanna know what the ecu knew about how your engine was running when it threw the code. it couldn't hurt and it might just help us help you, that's all.

No matter where you buy the ECU, the dealer has to enter the VIN into the new ECU. I would be cautious on long trips taking that car.

Thanks for the responses.

The dealer said when I swap the new ECM in I can still drive the car IF I don't have an immobilizer. I don't know if I do or not.

We bought AAA today. lol

So this morning I turned off the CEL. 65 miles to work in HORRIBLE rain.......65 miles back from work in even worse rain.....so far no engine light back on YET.

And the car runs absolutely flawlessly. I'd hate to spend $407 at www.1sttoyotaparts.com on a new ECM if I really didn't need one. What if it was a fluke.

I think all 2005+ have imoblizers. Do you have a blinking security light to the left of the steering wheel and a thick rubber like pad at the end of your key?

Yep. I guess I have the immobilizer. lol

Well, it's been 195 miles......or 3 trips to/from work @ 65 miles each through major rain here in southern Cali and the light hasn't come back on.

So I never bothered to buy the ECM, just lived with the light being on and the car has been fine for hundreds of miles and numerous commutes.

Last night I get out of the gym and the car is dead. Not even a click from the starter when the key is turned. No lights, nothing. Dead. Well I was hoping it was the battery.

I go get my Jeep to try and charge it. By the time I got my jeep and sat in the Corolla it was fully back to life again. FULLY.

So, I am guessing this little brain seizure is the ECM? Luckily it didn't happen while on the freeway.

What sucks is it's SO dam easy to swap in a new one. But I have to do this in the dealer's parking lot so they can program the new ECM because I have a security key and all that jazz.

yeah. I tried to get a quote online and gave them the VIN# but there's 3 choices so he needs the part number which is in the car in my garage. So now I have to wait until I get home and order tomorrow. Sucks.

I rather get the ECM than risk my wife experiencing a power failure at 75mph. She'd crap her panties.
