Canada Why does Toyota make such Cheap Bumpers?

So it was -22 C this morning... just cold, damn cold! I drive to work and as I park my 06 Corolla CE (outdoors), I accidently bump into a small snowbank thats about as high as the bottom of the bumper. The car was barely moving but I heard a loud cracking noise. The snow (which looked soft and fluffy) was literaly rock hard! Hard as ice! No thanks in part to the bone chillin' cold weather since last night...

Anyway, I get out of my car and go check out the front bumper and sure enough, its cracked right in the middle (the lower part of the bumper thats about 2 inches high). I also see a few cracked pieces of plastic and some paint flakes in the snow where it had the impact. I'm sure the fact that a freezing cold bumper hitting frozen rock solid snow didn't help but I've also noticed A LOT of corollas with cracked bumpers in the exact same spot... you would have thought that toyota would put a little bit more strength and quality in the front bumper if it breaks so easily like this. I'm just pissed and I don't even know if this is worth repairing. The paint was flaking off hardcore on my front bumper so I've been thinking of repairing or replacing it this summer...

Has anyone ever used this auto parts site?? http://cpwstore.carpartswholesale.co...versal:0)&sv=0

The parts are CHEAP and already primered, only need to be painted...

Plastic becomes brittle when cold, but the bumper covers do suck.

unfortunately plastic becomes brittle in extreme cold situations, whether it's a toyota, honda or ford... chances are it will crack, big difference from the old rubber bumpers.

I have seen this problem with all kinds of cars. It's just that at super cold temperatures this plastic, flexible as it is, becomes a piece of glass. Someone I know said he heard a loud crack noise when he started up his car on a frigid winter morning. He got out to see what happened, and discovered that the front bumper on his Caddy had split. Why do we live in this crappy climate again?
