$800 fuel pump--please help!

I've owned my 2005 Corolla with 67,000 miles for about 40 days and the fuel pump died (at least that's the diagnosis). Problem is, the Toyota dealer (they are not doing the work, but they seem to be the only place to get the part) says the fuel pump for my car is over $800--just because it was made in Japan. If it had been made in North America, the price would be $130-250. How can that be? I saw one other person on this forum had the same problem but he didn't get any help. I'm hoping someone can help. My mechanic gave me the fuel pump and said if I could find one, he would put it in. But after looking at 205 Denso fuel pumps, not one looked like what came out of my car. There are pumps that claim to be for Japan made corollas but none of them is the right kind. What do I do? Do I have to let this criminal corporation--Toyota--rob me blind or are there other options. Thank you for any help you can give. Also, once I get it fixed what should I do with the car? Sell it as fast as I can and never look at another Toyota? Hope that's the only ridiculously priced part and keep the car? Suggestions are welcome. Jim

Did they say what the code is? And are they sure it is not a clogged fuel filter? There are separate part numbers for fuel pumps, depending on where they are made. The pump its self only costs $300 from the dealer, but what they are selling you for $800 is the fuel pump assembly, which consists of pump, wires, relay, regulator, and filter. It is easier for them to change the whole assembly then to just change the pump out. With parts and labor it should be around $1100 if you go to the dealer to do it. I would get the pump (advanced auto, autozone or the like) and take it to a local mechanic and have him just replace the pump only and not the assembly, assuming you can get the car to him. Rockauto lists the pump but it says not for Japan built. PM me your VIN for more info.

Running the tank low on gas can cause excess heat to the pump and it fails.

Diagram of assembly:

Call these guys: http://newsite.monkeywrenchracing.co...roducts_id=844
and tell them your problem, see if they can help. Where ever you get the pump, make sure you tell them your VIN starts with J.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. The pictures at monkeyracing are not the right fuel pumps. I've got a friend who is a service advisor at the local toyota dealer who I asked to investigate and he told me today that I'm stuck. Evidently they don't sell that pump without everything else. He also claims that not all of the parts in this car are like that. But fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I guess I have to submit to extortion and dump this car. I wish I didn't really like the car.

My supplier shows the fuel pump for the Jap model as being part number:
23221-0D100
Lists for $310.37, but none in stock unfortunatly. All you can do is go to the dealer if you cant find it anywhere else. Thats starting to become the case in a lot of 2005 and newer cars with certain parts. Theres nothing you can do but pay up.

Input needed from all Japan made corolla owners

I recently posted about getting ripped off by Toyota for $800+ for a fuel pump assembly that could only be bought from the dealer [U]just because my car was built in Japan. We have bit the bullet and are having the fuel pump assembly put in today. (I must also point out we have owned this car for only a little over a month.) What I need to know from people with cars like mine that were built in Japan--are all the parts going to be this expensive, so totally out of line with North American built corollas? Or is the fuel pump just a freak example and all other parts will be similarly priced to North American corollas? I need to know, because if the fuel pump exerience is going to happen again, we will need to get rid of it asap. Please advise. Thanks.

Fuel pump

Check junk yards and E-bay. I have seen many parts on ebay from cars getting parted out.
