Tokico "blue" HP Series Review

After a year and a half (25K later) on our Tokico "blue" HP series struts on my wife's 2003 Corolla they are still stiffer than heck. Any little bump you feel like you are in a lowered sports car with a stiff suspension. I can honestly say that the stock ones which were blown had a softer plushier feel. Her car is a daily commuter and nothing more. With a baby on the way I want a softer plusher ride for the baby and my wife. We have 120k on her now and she is still running strong, but the ride is killing my us. I thought I made the right choice w/ these as everyone said to get the blue ones as it is close to an OEM ride and feel. My mistake or did I get a bad batch? Nothing was replaced other than the struts. Will they get softer or do I need to look else where? What is the softest/plushest ride out there to make my wife happy! Thanks!

No, not a bad batch, they are like that. Tokico HP's ride a bit firmer than stock. They're meant usually for pairing with lowering springs. I run them on my car as well and I personally think they're much too soft.

If you want a soft ride comparable to OEM, get KYB GR2s

Thanks for the info. Like I said it is a daily driver and I got what we thought would be the best based on everyone's reviews and opinions. Too bad we had to spend the money to get something that didn't work well for our needs. Got one question though since we went with the Tokico all around could we just swap out the front and not the back to save some money and soften up the ride a bit or should we just swap them all? Thanks!

Things like this happen all the time...a lot of people can be mislead since most would be looking to modify for performance, it all comes down to how clear the original poster states their question and their needs. The clearer and more detailed the question is about their needs, the more likely they are going to get a better response.

With that said, I would recommend replacing all 4 at once. Mixing and matching struts will likely cause your car to have unpredictable handling characteristics. Not something I would save money on. KYBs are pretty inexpensive altogether to begin with.

The thing about Tokico HP's is that they come with a lifetime warranty. So you could sell them and make back a part of what you paid after you get KYB GR2s.

For that you should get Konis.

Tokico Blues aren't really meant for lowering beyond 1.5" or so.

It would be a good combination. I know of a few people running H&R Race springs (2" drop) with HP blue's with no problems.

For a stock ride, just get Monroe or whatever the cheap equivalent of OEM is. The KYB GR2 is supposed to be a performance strut like the Tokico HP.

IMO Tokicos are better than Konis.
I've had the HP's (Blues) on my Camry and my AE102 Corolla and both were dropped +2.5" and on both cars even after several years of being slammed the Tokicos were great. Pre Tein SSP, I had Konis on my tC and one blew after a couple months on a 2" drop.

Guess they're really hit and miss then. I don't know of any other adjustable shock options for the 7th gen Corolla. They've been highly regardard in the Honda community when paired with Ground Control sleeves. Only reason I didn't get them was mainly the high cost at the time.

I've been running Tokico blues myself while lowered for almost two years and they've been great. Very good performance for the price you pay. Just hope to get my TRD Coilovers rebuilt soon. I really wanna be slammed again, but lifetime warranty is just too good to pass up for now.
