2006 Corolla LE died while driving. Replaced the battery and the alternator (both were tested and found bad), tried to start car but nothing happens. When you turn the car to the on position, the lights/radio etc work. Once you try to start the car, everything dies. A couple seconds later, electronics turn back on.
Could be ignition switch or relay but more info is needed. Check the ground connections to make sure nothing is loose. Try putting the key to on (not start) wait 5 seconds and then turn the key to start. Any CELs? Can you hear a click from the starter when turning the key over? After the car died, did you happen to try to jump start it?
its my girlfriends car and when it died, her grandfather jumped it for her. He may have reversed the polarity but I'm not sure.
I've tried holding it to "on", waiting and then turning to start but no matter how you do it, as soon as it gets to "start" it seems like something trips the computer and everything electronic cuts out. When the key is in the on position, all the lights on the dash are on but when you turn the key they all turn off so not sure about the CEL.

The radio should go off when you're in the "start" position (helps protect it from back EMF and such). That part *seems* normal unless they're some aspect you haven't conveyed to us.

24V at at least 600A? No, the cables would have gotten seriously hot had they been reversed for very long at all.

I'll have to check my own car to see if dash warning lights turn off while cranking. Maybe they DO stay on. Starting a car is so automatic for most of us that we don't even think of those things.
However, it just snowed here and I'd rather stay in my pajamas a while longer... Maybe I'll go look later to see what the normal behavior is.
the problem is that everything electronic dies. Not just the radio. The computer wont even let the starter crank. In a few seconds, the headlights/door lights and such will come back on.
this just made me think of what my electronics teacher once told us, "always remember the KISS Principle, Keep It Simple, Stupid!" whenever you've got a problem with your car, the first things you should always check for are the most simple, like battery terminal connections, grounds, (physically) open electrical connectors, etc; basically don't make a problem into something more complex than it actually is, the answer is usually more simple than you realize. That was one of the best pieces of advise I have gotten in regard to diagnosing car problems.
