2007 Corolla with Scion Wheels

Hey guys. Noob here. I picked up a set of stock 17" wheels from a 2007 Scion TC and put them on my 2007 Corolla LE , which had the steel 15" wheels - it looks SO much better now. Less "pudgy" is how I describe it.

Here's how she looks:

For anyone else considering this, I couldn't find much info or pictures anywhere online, so I hope this will help anyone who wants to do the same thing. Here's what I learned:

1. The wheels fit directly on without spacers. Cool.

2. Lug nuts: You can NOT use your stock lugs if you're going from the steel wheels. You'll have to buy a set of 12mm x 1.5" Toyota Mag lugs. This was the best deal I found, and they worked great for me: Tulip City Wheels
A dealer or wheel shop will charge you $80-100 for the set of 20 lugs; you can get these shipped for about $30. And they ship pretty fast.

3. Touch-up: I got my whole set of Scion wheels from a guy locally for under $200, but they had been scraped on a lot of curbs. So I sanded down the damaged parts of the outer rims, which took the paint off. The local wheel shop said it'd cost $225 per wheel to strip and repaint them . . . so I went to AutoZone and got some Rust-Oleum Gloss Steel High Performance Wheel Paint for $5.99. It's a very close match, and unless you're looking REALLY close, it blends in so well you can't even tell. Maybe a bit redneck, but it saved me a ton of money and looks great.

4. Tire size: if you put 225/45 R17 tires on those Scion wheels, you'll end up with the same effective size (diameter) as you originally had, so you won't have to do any calibration on your speedometer.

5. Practicality: Tires are 1" wider, so you get better handling and slightly lower gas mileage

Good luck out there!
-Ryan

Well, I wasn't going to do anything at first . . . then I put these wheels on . . . and now I'm on this forum, where you guys are going to start making me think about ("need") other mods . . . I think I might be in trouble!

Thanks! It definitely handles a little better - I think the new wheels have a slightly wider stance. The tires are a bit louder, but that's not a big deal for me.

Thanks. Very good tips.

Just some maths for the wheel/tire size:
Stock 195/65 R15 => 24.98 in (original diameter as 100%)
205/55 R16 => 24.88 in (-0.4%)
225/45 R17 => 24.97 in (-0.0%)

These sets of wheel/tire give hardly any noticeable error in the stock speedometer.

Nice, thanks. I never really understood the tire sizing numbers.

Sweet ride. Definitely looks better than the stock rims and tires. I was thinking about doing that same set up to my ride and with your post, I think I'm definitely going to go this route. Just need to find someone or someplace to buy them from. What brand of tire did you end up going with?

I just went with the Federal Super Steel S95's over at Les Schwab (who, by the way, had competitive prices and was very helpful to bag up my old tires/wheels & load them in my back seat for me). They're kinda the cheaper tires, but they're very aggressive looking and I didn't want to shell out the extra hundred bucks for the nicer tires.

Here, I just took a pic of them so you can see:

Sweet set-up. I got a '03 Corolla S-type. I think this would be awesome on my ride.

I think it looks very nice, however, the gap in the wheel well looks more pronounced with the bigger wheels.

George - I do agree. It would probably look a lot better if I lowered it. But I have another car I'd rather spend money on, so I'll probably just leave this one as is.

[Speaking of, that's a beauty in your signature. Mach 1? '70?]

It's a 70 alright, but a Boss 302. Not my ride, but the best match in appearance to the Mustang I had in HS.

BTW: Welcome to TN!

That setup of Scion wheels looks great! And thanks for the information. I may try that on my 05.
