05 Corolla- Bad ECM????

So here's my problem- couple of weeks back, I was driving my 2005 Corolla CE (88K miles, automatic transmission) and suddenly, my check engine light came on and my car started to jerk as it shifted gears. Note that the car did not die or shut off. Just that when it shifted, i could feel jersk.

So i took it to the local toyota dealership in houston and the service rep told me it was a bad ECM (the diagnostic code P2716 was noted). Apparently, the ECM is covered by the Federal Emissions Warranty- 8 years or 80K miles. Since i'm at 88K, i'm out of luck here. but what kinda pissed me off was that I've been taking my corolla to the same dealership for the past 3 years and they knew a bad ecm was a common problem among 05 corollas, but neglected to tell me, but this is besides the point.

So, basically, the rep told me i have to get ECM replaced and it will cost me $815. I took it to another independent mechanic and he told me to put some Lucas Transmissions Fix. I did so and the next day, my car stopped jerking and the check engine light went off. So, now i'm confused...was it really the ECM? If yes, then i'm assuming the check engine light will come back on again unless i put in some more transmission fix fluid. If it wasn't the ECM, then why did the dealership tell me that was the issue?

Also, what do i do? I mean, i don't want to be driving around with a bad ECM..last thing i need is for my car to die while driving on the highway or get stranded somewhere.

Any clues? any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Dazed and Confused.

It is probably the ECU. Check out http://avtopedia.ru/T-TC014-06.pdf and '06 Matrix P2716

I would not go on long trips with it. The Lucas is probably just a band aid.

And since the code never showed up before 80K, there is nothing toyota could have done since it did not display a code.
