Corolla won't stay running

My 2007 Corolla has started having issues today and I suspect it is the ECU. It was working fine most of the day, then my wife took it out and it it acted as though it was out of gas about a quarter mile from home. We were able to get it to start twice more on the street, but each one it ran for less time than the last. I connected my ODBII and it couldn't communicate with the ECU. I checked for spark on the plugs and fuel up to the fuel injectors. Eventually I tried disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to reset the computer. Then the car started and the ODBII connected. It ran for another quarter mile or so and then the same thing happened again. Started a few times and the ODBII wouldn't connect.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of issue or any other troubleshooting ideas for me?

Do you hear the fuel pump try to pressurize the line when you turn the key to the run position?
