43mpg possible?

Greetings folks. Long time lurker here. Just took my 2008 S auto, from new york to north carolina. On the way there I got 39 mpg. Coming home I got 43 mpg. Is this correct ? it was my first long trip with the car. Running mobil 1 , oil, had 4000 miles on it. Ran tire pressure at 40 lbs. averaged 70/75 miles per hour. Any comments........

If you drive conservatively, sure, I don't see why not.

I got a little over 42mpg in my 7th gen when I drove economically and stuck to the speed limit until the tank ran out.

I got 41.3 between North Carolina and Pennsylvania once...that included lots of mountains and 80MPH driving.

Since you were in North Carolina, did you fill up before you left? Lots of gas stations there don't have ethanol blended into the gas. On my way down I maxed out at 38MPG on blended gas. The 41.3MPG leg of the trip was on ethanol-free gas from North Carolina.

Don't mean to brag, but I have got 47 mpg out of my 06 Corolla LE. I cleaned the MAF, installed the K&N Performance Air Filter, Installed E3 Spark plugs, and drove with cruise at a constant 55 on the back roads. My ScanGauge claimed 47.1 mpg! This happened for a good 20 minutes too! Usually, I get around 32 - 35 city driving and about 42-45 highway. Take good care of your car and be gentle and it will take care of you and your pocket book!

On a side note, you do notice an increase in acceleration and overall performance if you do these upgrades. I did this about a month ago and am loving the results!

Last summer my 03 LE w/automatic & A/C got 41 mpg overall going south with 3 passengers on I-75 between TN and south FL. Coming back north on same road @ same speed I got 37. That seems odd since I ran in lots of very heavy rain going down and no rain coming back. I guess I could have been running against a headwind that I didn't notice. Whatever, it was still very economical traveling in a reasonably comfortable car. My daughter's old '92 Sentra w/stick and A/C will also do that well on gas, but it's not as roomy and it's noisy on the highway. I'm new here and it's probably heresy to say this on a Toyota board, but in truth her Sentra has been a great car too. Can't beat the small Jap cars for reliability and economy over the long run IMHO.

My best tank was 39.xx mpg. It was a road trip and I never drive to GET good mpg, so, if I'd try, I think that 43 was reasonable. For the past 45,000 miles I've averaged 34+ mpg. Again, that's just driving the car however....

We have got as high as 48.xx mpg in our 2006 on a roadtrip home from Flagstaff, AZ. Mainly downhill on the way back to Phoenix. On the other hand, in our 2010 driving the same way we only got 34.xx mpg on the same trip.
