Axle Wobble at Transmission

I just replaced one of the front wheel bearings in an 04 corolla. Was a bit of a hassle since had to machine some adapters out of aluminum to help press the old bearing out and new one in.
Anyway, while I was under there I noticed a fair amount of radial play between the inner CV joint and the transmission. And it was the same on both sides. Does anyone know what is acceptable here? Are there bearings inside the trans that support the axles?

Is this an automatic? I used to have an auto Camry with quite a bit of play, and it leaked tranny fluid where the axle went into the transmission. When I wanted to have the seal replaced, my mechanic was not willing to touch it, because he said there was way too much play, and the seal replacement wouldn't fix the leak. So I did it myself, and though the leak dimished, it didn't go away completely.

Now I have a manual Corolla and the axles are completely stiff.

Yes, It IS an automatic. I would think the diffs are the same between standard and auto, but could be wong. It's my girlfriend's car and I definitely can't see her driving a stick.
Nothing is leaking yet. She's thinking of getting a new car, maybe it's better to do that sooner than later.
