Change it now, T-IV does not hold up well, it is not the greatest fluid. Color is not an indication of quality, but smell is. If it is smells any where remotely burnt, change it. Redline D4 and Amsoil ATF are great compatible fluids, however they are not approved by toyota. There are a few others that are compatible too, Mobil 1, castrol, and RP to name a few. Read the labels of the ATF to find out if they are compatible with Toyota T-IV. I run D4 without problem.
The only fluid approved by toyota is Mobil 3309 and their T-IV, which are the exact same fluids. 3309 is very rare to find. Toyota does not make any fluids, T-IV is just re-bottled 3309. T-IV can be bought at the stealer ship for about $5 a quart. T-IV is not a synethic fluid. If you decide to change it, multiple drain and refills are easy to mix old fluid with new fluid, as a drain gets less that half of the fluid out of the total system, but is expensive. A cooler line flush is more efficient at mixing fluids, but is a bit more involved. There is a DIY on here on how to do the cooler line flush.
