Talking Finally! A fix for those damn blanking clocks!

I suspected a cold solder joint somewhere on the board - I just wasn't sure what exactly was causing it. I haven't confirmed the fix yet, but I will tomorrow. Looks simple enough.

I came across another page that also seems to confirm the surface mounted resistors on a nissan clock as well that causes the same problem:

http://www.carstereoremoval.com/htm/...inderClock.htm

Subaru-clock.com has been offering a fix the corolla clock problem and others for awhile, and I suspect that this is the service he is offering - just resoldering the SMR's. OOPS - secret leaked...sorry buddy.

I gave it a try yesterday and it's working beautifully so far. I really didn't need to add any solder - just heating up the existing solder joints seemed to fix it. But you may need to add solder depeding on your clock.

I only spend a few minutes heating up the joints and reassembly. Maybe a 1/2 hour tops.

Done.

That's a nice writeup. I go through a lot of threads on a daily basis so I might miss a few here and there.

Best thing to do is shoot me a PM next time with the thread link and I'll be glad to add it to the 9th gen sticky!

Sorry to necro-thread, but I'm chipping in another success story. The whole job took less than 15 minutes... plugged that sucker back in and that thing works like a charm now. Nice and bright.

The state of the board, at least on mine, wasn't too bad at first glance. I didn't have the obvious gobs of oxidized solder like the OP, but I still had whatever cold solder joint was causing the issue. I believe the problem lies with the "181" resistor closest to the power connector. It appears that the way they fluxed my board, they missed that particular resistor altogether, at least on mine. This would explain why it would have a cold solder joint.

Once I started desoldering, I quickly realized what a mess it really was - the flux they used is extremely messy, at least after all these years. I had to desolder, solder, then desolder, then solder again some of the joints because they were such a mess and the solder just wouldn't go on clean.
