You gotta remember where your asking the question too...lol. One plus in me purchasing the corolla (I was looking at both models as well) is the fact that it has a timing chain and not a belt. Not sure how much work is involved with the swap but it's one less thing I have to worry about. Considering I'm approaching 100,000 miles.

do a search on Honda transmission issues...plus 1 on the timing chain vs belt.. I had an Accord that gave me no troubles until 60k ish when the transmission took a nose dive, I had the Honda on rergular maintence schedule by the book.. they wanted me to pay $3,500 for a new transmission, I sold it as fast as I could with the buyer knowing of the condition and we have 3 Toyotas since..very happy. The Civic gets a lot of attention for being more sporty, the Corolla is what it is, an economical car that won't let you down. Honda lost all respect from me also due to the fact they can't make a truck, that Ridgeline is the ugliest thing I have seen. But we are a little bias here.

I owned a 2003 Civic, but I traded it for a 2009 Corolla bacause I hit a large hole in the street and wrecked the suspension and broke the windsheild. Yes, I could have fixed it, but I suspected the frame was bent.
I am not going to compare the 2003 Civic to the 2009 Corolla. I had my airbags stolen just before Chistmas last year and the insurance comapny gave me a rental while my car window and airbag was being replaced. The rental company gave me a 2006 Corolla. I suspect they keep it around for emergencies. The 2006 Corolla was so bad that the next day I took it back and told them it stalled out twice ( lie ) just so that I could get another car. They gave me a 2009 Civic.

Here is my evaluation of all 4 cars.

2003 Civic 8.5 / 10
2006 Corolla (same as 2003 model ) 6.0 / 10

2009 Civic 8.5 / 10
2009 Corolla 7.5 / 10

Go with the 2003 Civic over the 2003 Corolla. ( If they are in the same shape )

Get another car

Go with the Honda Accord,

My 03 and sister's 05 corolla had too many similar problems.
Also my two aunts brought 03 corollas and we all have AC Problems, and stupid stuff breaking down.

Both are cheaply made.. get something solid like an Accord. just my opinion
