I installed a K&N 57i Cold Air intake into my 2005 Corolla S and im now getting a check engine light. I think its because my MAF Sensor can only handle so much and the new intake is pushing alot more air past the sensor now so its causing it to freak out. What would be my best option? Should I buy a bigger aftermarket MAF Senor? Or is there another cheaper option that will fix this issue.
Was this intake for an 05-08 corolla, if it was not installed correctly it could trip a CEL but most likely the filter is overoiled. Clean the MAF with CRC MAF cleaner. What is the increase in diameter vs the stock piping? Did it trip the CEL right after you installed it, or over time?
The intake I got fits from 2001-2009. There was no change in diameter vs the stock piping and it triggered the CEL after driving about 20 miles on the highway. I havent driven more than 20-30 miles on the road yet so im not sure if only because of the high speed.
he means the airfilter was overoiled and the sensor cant correctly read the amount of air coming in and temp of air cause the oil contaminated the sensors. get some electronic spray and remove the mass air flow and spray it in the sensor. if the cel comes on it will be p0171.
Can i use carb cleaner to spray the MAF sensor or should I use specific MAF cleaner for it? And if it turns out my engine is running too lean then how do i richen it up a little?
go to the parts store and get eletronic spray. you cant richen our lean the fuel the computer is doing all the work for you by reading all the inputs like maf ,temp, o2 sensors ect.... trying to reach stoikiometry 14.7/1 air to fuel.
Yea thats what i thought. Ill pick up some elctronic spray from Schucks tomorrow morning and see if my CEL stays off forever now instead of coming back on after a little while again. Is this a common problem with installing a new filter?
Check the 2 MAF wires for what? And what do you mean by not the tear drop IAT sensor for oil?
Check the two MAF wires for oil contamination. When you remove the MAF, there is another sensor next to the MAF wires, it is tear drop shaped. That is the IAT sensor. Clean that with MAF cleaner or electronics cleaner too. Sometimes people think the IAT is the MAF and ignore cleaning the 2 wires, which are the MAF wires. Brake cleaner is not sensor safe so only use MAF cleaner or electronics cleaner, you do not want a residue when you clean it. Make sure the car is cool for a while, you do not want to clean the MAF when the wires are super hot, which happens when it functions correctly. Before you clean the MAF, disconnect the negative battery terminal, clean the MAF and allow it to fully dry, then reconnect the negative terminal. Never touch the MAF wires with anything but the cleaner, the wires are very delicate. Also try to remove some of the excess oil on the filter so this doesn't happen again.
I cleaned the MAF and IAT Sensor and drove it about 20 miles and the CEL came on again. I went to Autozone to have them pull the code and like you said its P0171. Any ideas?
Either you have a vac leak or the location of the MAF sensor is not at the correct location in the piping. MAF has to be placed in a location where the diameter is 2.75 inches. Did you check the o ring where the MAF is housed and are you absolutely sure the vac lines are hooked up the correct way?
I checked all my connections and all of them are tight. None of them are loose at all. I took pictures of the intake so maybe you guys can see if im missing something. I also took a picture of the evap line because I removed it thinking it needed to be replaced with a new supplied hose but then reinstalled it after i figured there would be no difference between the stock one and the new one. I see it has a green valve in the middle of the hose. Is this supposed to be filled with a certain amount of pressure?
