Tried to change oil but drained transmission fluid instead

Longtime reader, first time poster...

I'm kind of a girly-girl, but today I decided I wanted to learn how to change my 03 Corolla's oil myself in order to save a little money. I bought oil, a new oil filter, and oil filter wrench and asked one of my guy friends to come over to help me out, as this was my first attempt at changing my own oil and I needed assurance that I was doing everything alright. Anyway, long story short, my guy friend showed me where to drain the oil from and where to put the oil in and then had to go to work. I drained the oil, changed filter, and put in the number of quarts that the guy at the auto store (where I bought the oil) had told me. However, when I tried to back my car out of driveway and leave my house, car was driving sluggish and not shifting properly (car would rev up when I pushed on gas pedal but would be hesitant about shifting gears or would not go into drive gear at all). I put my car in Park and let it idle for a few minutes and tried again. Same thing. Drove the car around the block a few times and down the street (about 2 miles total driving, and less than 15 minutes idling). Called my cousin over to look at the car and he figured out my friend had mistaken my transmission drain bolt for my oil drain bolt. According to my tranny dip stick, I had ZERO transmission fluid (meanwhile, my oil level was twice what it should be...). Tomorrow my cousin is coming over to put in new tranny fluid and change oil properly. My question is: how can I tell how much damage I did to my transmission/engine by driving a few miles without fluid/twice as much oil?? If tomorrow when everything is replaced/drained, and IF the car runs fine, should I not worry about it, or am I still in danger of transmission damage down the road (pun intended)? Any helpful response would be much appreciated!!
Thanks!

All the oil will have to be drained along with the filter. Doubling the amount of oil can lead to problems. Have your cousin pull the spark plugs to look for oil. Hopefully you did not blow a seal or gasket. You only drained about 3.5 quarts from the tranny, which is less than half of the total capacity. You might be ok there.
