05 corolla s torque converter or ecm??

I have a 2005 toyota corolla s that has been coding P0741 saying torque converter it has been doing this for over a year the light would come on and go off for about the first 6 months now it just stays on all the time. I recently pulled my vin number and it said they had a recall for the ecm so i went and got the ecm # and it matched the numbers for recalled ecm. I was wondering if this could have anything to do with the P0741 code.

How many miles do you have? There is a TSB that may apply to your car and is related To the ECU issue but covered under a different service notice. So getting a new ecu may solve the problem or more work may need to be done.

You are well out of any warranty unless it was bought used and came with a warranty. A TSB is a technical service bulletin. It is not a recall, but it informs customers with problems with a car and how to fix it. There was a 60K mile warranty on that fix, but you are well past that and the fix is on you. On the TSB, a potential fix is to replace the ECU, along with some other items. I am not sure what Toyota will do in November when you bring your car in for the ECU recall. They will see the engine light, and then scan for the code, likely at your expense. There will be some sort of protocol, but I dont know what it is. You can hold out until November when you get the new ECU or wait, but I dont know if that will cause any problems with the tranny, but you said it was on and off for a year. If you have inspection in the next 2 months, it will not pass with that light on.

Cut and past from the TSB:

TSB number TC008-04
