Gas filler neck flap thing

Just noticed that the little flap in the tank filler neck that folds open when you put the gas station nozzle in is gone. It only has one place to go i assume, down in the tank. Can this guy cause any harm down in there? How does the pump / fuel pickup work in these cars?

Mine doesnt have one, but the older toyotas do. Not really sure of their purpose. There is a check valve in the tank so if the car flips over gas does not come out.

Even if you drop a piece of metal of that size into the tank, it wouldn't cause any problem. It is too large to make it through the screen.
