im not a professional or anything but i know the alternator charges the battery. if the alternator broke you could have had enough reserve in the battery to start the car in the morning but didnt have enough power to start it again. dont hold me to it and i wouldnt assume it is the alternator. but with your new battery, you'll know if it is something more than the old battery was old. just a thought!

Could be an alternator. You could have perceivably discharged the battery until it went completely dead, and without any power, your engine won't stay running.

It's always a bad sign if your engine stops due to a dead battery. That always means there's a charging system issue somewhere (unless of course your battery is ancient anyway and won't hold a charge anymore).
