'05 Corolla Bearing Replacement

Hi folks, I'll do an intro later, but I have a question first-

I believe I need to replace the left front wheel bearings on my '05 Corolla. Is it as simple as pulling the caliper out of the way and removing the staked nut? I'm thinking there is a pair of tapered rollers in there, but I don't know for sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

No, the fronts need to be pressed, have a shop do the work or take off the knuckle and bring it to the shop and have them press the bearing out and in. Take it home and put the whole knuckle back in yourself. The rears are a different story. If you have ABS, be careful when ordering the correct part.

Thanks MikeRed30, that's about what I thought. I can get the thing off, easily enough. I really hate to pay for labor I can do. So, there's only one bearing in there?

Thanks, dorman68. I ended up not being able to get the axle nut off- the 1/2" impact I bought in 1976 when I repaired cars for a living is getting weak- so I took it to a shop I trust and had them do it. $500 later, it's nice and quiet. I'll have to tackle this next time, and save myself about $300.

I will say here that I'm a bit disappointed with my Corolla. It's had a water pump, right rear wheel bearing and hub and a transaxle replaced in 98,000 miles. Now, a front wheel bearing and hub. Frankly I expected a lot better than that. Repairs now total more than one third the purchase price.

'nother update- subsequent to the replacement of the transmission, I'm hearing a noise that I'm pretty sure is indicative of a trashed crankshaft thrust bearing. It's going to the dealer tomorrow. I'm bummed, it's out of warranty...didn't make it to 100,000.
