2008 corolla tires worn out at 17k miles

Hi,

I bought new 2008 corolla and got the tires rotated at around 8k miles. Now when I got the tires rotated at 17k miles they are pretty worn out. One of the tires is at 3/32 and the rest are 4/32 and 5/32. I don't see uneven wear. I didn't get alignment done yet.

Any suggestions?

The car is still under warranty. Anything mechanical could be wrong causing premature wear?

Any other suggestions/comments?

Thanks

The stock tires on my 05 sucked (I think they were Bridgestones Insignia's) and didn't get more than roughly 30,000 miles on them. Had lots of dry rot cracks in the sidewalls. Car handled poorly in rain and snow. If tires are stock replace them with better tires and don't look back.

Could it be some other issue causing tires to wear at 17k miles? What new tires are recommended?

Tires should be rotated every 5,000 miles or 6 months for starters.....and most OEM tires don't last at all anyway. If you try to go back to the dealer and get them warrantied for premature wear they probably won't honor it because the tires weren't rotated until 8k and 17k.

Buy a higher quality tire with a higher treadwear rating (most OEM tires are rated around 200-300 treadwear). Michelin's make a good tire, don't bother with Goodyear unless you get the Triple Treads, those are pretty good tires!

I read in forums that new tires with vehicle don't have any warranty. Anyway...

So doesn't seem to be due to some issues... I am planning to get alignment also done and will make sure to rotate every 5000 miles going forward.

There are various causes for tire wear. Lots of hard stops and fast starts can wear down the tread. The type of road and driving style can possibly affect tire wear. And age of the tire could be a factor. Check the age of the tire on the car as well as any new tires put on. Some have found that the local shop had tires that were several years old.

People will chime in with various brands. Check with TireRack.com for various tire reviews. I put a set of four Michelin X-Radial DT (at the time rated one of the best all weather tire from Consumer Reports) from Costco on my car two years ago and they've been really good. Was $400 installed with a milage warranty, free rotation and flat repair. New tires improved the handling of the car in snow and rain.

Consumer Reports, as of 11/1/2010, lists the following tires as the best all weather tires; Continental ProContact ECOPLUS +, Hankook Optimo H727, and Goodyear Assurance TripleTred.

Each new car comes with a separate tire warranty booklet, which is a completely different warranty than the new car warranty. But yeah, doing roations ever 5k will help at least somewhat.
