It's hard to get a good answer when you need it right away, lol. So I got it. There's no need to remove any snap ring. I used a ball joint separator, and a small sledge hammer (which is about as long as a normal claw hammer - just with a big, sledgehammer head). I found a good spot to pry against the transaxle while holding the balljoint separator in place and gave it a good whack with the sledgehammer. She popped right out. It takes a lot of pressure - just don't pull on the axle or you might pop out the cv joint I read that somewhere. Keep the axle end clean.
