grinding when shifting in to 3rd gear on 2005 Corolla CE
Our car recently started grinding everytime you shift in to the 3rd gear (but not when you shift out). The dealership says it's likely a synchro problem. Anyone else have any experience with this? Is it better to get the whole transmission taken apart and replace the piece or get a different transmission from the wreckers put in? If replacing the 3rd gear synchro is the best option, should all of them be replaced to avoid having to take apart the whole transmission again for a future gear?

Any tips or advice would be appreciated!
I'm not sure what the best option is regarding the mechanics of the tranny, but I would try to replace the tranny oil first. Drain and refill is quite simple (almost like an oil change - search my name for a DIY with pictures). Even with RedLine oil, it won't cost you more then $25, and it might fix the grinding.

my car is doing the same thing, is 08 Corolla, and I already bleed the clutch, changed transmission oil (AMSoil Now) and still doing the grinding when the car drive in the morning. so I don't think is the transmission oil.

does your car grind only when going from 2nd to 3rd once in the morning and then after that the tranny runs likes its brand new?
yes, but once the engine warm up and didn't grind anymore.

i have an 08 corolla with 28k miles and its doing the same thing. I just talk to my auto instructor about the problem and he said the the syncro is bad or is just going bad. He said that since the car sits out too long the oil in the syncro drains and causes the grinding. also he said syntectic transmission oil might fixl or have the syncro replaces. but if you dont want to do that just skip that gear and then after u can use it without it grinding.

I used to have a bit of "crunchiness" into 2nd gear when the tranny was cold. I replaced the tranny oil with RedLine (synthetic), and ever since the tranny is like butter. That's why I gave that suggestion.

that is the idea I used amsoil transmission oil, they are synthetic but didn't improve much, I gave it another month or 2 then I take my car to the dealer, since right now they are busy for snow tires changing.

This is a very common problem with the C-59 and C-60 transmission. I would personally try Redline MT-90 oil in the tranny first. I'd also suggest double clutching while the transmission is cold. Once warm the sythetic transmission oil will make every shift smoother.
I was dealing with this in my 1zz. And now it proves to be much worse in the 2zz.
I have a 2008 Corolla S with the 5 Speed trans and at 25,000 it started the 3 gear grind for the first 2-3 shifts when cold ( I live in Texas so cold is relative) It does not matter if it is from 2-3 or 4-3 and the clutch is down to the floor. Thanks to the forum, I am going to try new fluid first and will let you know
I took my 2008 Corolla S to the local dealer. They kept it over night and in the morning it behaved as it did for me - grinding when shifting to 3rd gear. They changed the fluid and let it set again. It still behaved badly and when they drained out the fluid they saw some metal chips.
The dealer called Toyota and they authorized a transmission replacement. I had to wait another day (3 days in all) but I got a brand new transmission under warranty and the car runs well now. I have to give the dealer, Pat Lobb, credit for a job well done.
We have a 2003 Matrix with a 5 speed manual. The transaxle was replaced at about 70k, now with 114k the 2-3 shift is shot. We even brought the car back to the dealer right away after the replacement and the guy basically told my wife she didn't know what she was talking about. I'm guessing it is shot again. Sounds like everyone has this problem. Thanks Toyota for standing behind your stuff.
