+1 Denso, hands down............Mikered and I were helping someone yesterday with a 2004 rola that needed a precat o2 sensor..............I looked it up on rockauto.com for them...........you can get the Denso delivered for less than $70 for the precat one..........search the internet for a 5% off promotion and plug it in.......

* I am assuming you have the 1zz engine

I do believe so, but I'll have to check on that engine.
Are they hard to install? Could I do it myself?

Can't remember the number but it said Cat performing below threshold. Before I think about replacing the cat which is very very exspensive, I thought I would take a chance and change both 02 sensors and see if that clears it.

Yes, it was just the 420 code. Lots of miles all highway, 230,000.
I added a can of Sea-Foam to my full tank of gas. The light went out, at least for now; but I think it will return. I have heard that it may not be a bad cat, and it could be being triggered by a faulty sensor. That's why I was going to change the sensors; the least expensive for now, but I'm not a mechanic although I am mechanicaly handy.

if it is just the one code, p0420. it could be a lot of things. If that was my car I would bring the maintance up first ie., air filter, pcv and cv hoses, plugs, clean the Tb, iacv, maf, I might even replace vacuum lines with that many miles, if the o2 sensors are original. they are ready to be changed. if you do all that and it is still on then it is propably the CAt..........if the CAT gets real bad it might even start to glow when very not..

I did replace the air filter and plugs. The oil is changed every 4k. I know what the pcv is and I will change that but I'm not sure I know what the iacv, maf and the Tb are. Could you please be more specific? also, are these things something I can do myself?

IACV=Idle Air Control Valve, MAF= Mass Air Flow sensor, TB=Throttle Body. The maf senosr is in the intake hose that runs from the airfilter to the TB. it reads the airflow if it is dirty it sends the wrrong info to the ecu.Go. Buy a can. Of MAF cleaner $7 instructions on the can you might also need a blind Torx 20 to remove the MAF, buy a can of THROTlle. body cleaner $4. Donot use Carb cleaner take tb cover off open the butterfly and spray. the IACV uis attached to the TB it adjusts the airflow to the TB. it can get sticky thus when the ecu adjusts it it does not work. Remove the IACV and clean the cavity out with the throttle body cleaner. You might need a new gasket for it. Change pcv valve and hoses if you can. do you know the maintenance history of the vehicle........has the coolant been flushed, does the car have the original radiator/heater hoses? original serp belt? if those things are all original they should be changed and even if they are not original they might need to be changed. ..the stuff i just mentioned it is doable by a average person.do some searches fo rthem and you will figure it out.........you also can go to rockauto.com and look up the parts to see what they look like
