2004 Corolla CODE PO 420 137,000 miles

Went to Toyota with an engine light. They said the code was PO 420 and i needed a catalytic converter and new front and back washers. They wanted 1500 to replace.

Where can I get a decent price converter and washers? I have a mechanic that charger $15 an hour to work on my car. I normally take to Toyota to get a diagnostic but buy somewhere else and let my mechanic put the stuff on.

2004 Corolla P0420 Code

I used Walker direct fit exhaust parts to replace the cat. converter. They have a five year, 50K mile warranty. You can buy them at local parts store or online for about $300-400. Don't go cheap with the generic converters for under $100. You'll regret it.

When you say 'front and back washers' did you mean front and back oxygen sensors? Those sensors are recommended to be replaces after 100,000 miles and are often replaced at the same time as the cat. converter. They are available at most auto stores and cost $75-100 each for direct fit replacements.

I agree with aspen007, buy a good aftermarket converter as the cheapie genereic ones will haunt you in the near future.

Are they positive that code is for the cat and not for the back O2 sensor?

The check engine light went out a couple days ago...As long as out i am not going to worry. Any additive i can add to the gas to clean the pipes out?

Well, i wish my P0420 code would go away.

I'm down to replacing my cat. Already replaced spark plugs, and downstream O2 to no luck but still pass emissions with
flying colors.

See with a P0420, it doesn't take much to set it off.

Also there is no additive to clean the the pipes out if not make it worse.
