p0171 05 corolla

I have a couple of questions.

I have an 05 corolla, it has 100,000 miles on it. It has not had any repairs done to it since being baught, at least according to Carfaxs.

After buying the car with 86,000 miles, the check engine light came on after about 2-3k miles. It was the p0171, took it to the dealer, $55 dollars to clean the MAF. About 400 miles later the light came back no same code, well it went off for a while, then would come back on (probably about 6-7 times), I reset the code twice hoping it would go away, but to no suffice. I decided to make another appointment to have the dealership look it. I looked at what the code a couple days before taking it, and it said "p0171 system to lean bank 1", as it had been.

Well the dealerships paper work says the code said "p0171; Oxygen sensor bank". I've googled around, and I can't seem to find a code that has p0171 and oxygen sensor in the same sentence. Is this just a way for them not to look bad for fixing the issue to first time, or do their code readers smarter than my universal one? This isn't a Toyota dealership btw.

They said the code was a "history code" and not a current one, so they reset it and said if it comes back on they will replace the oxygen sensor. I am starting to lose faith in them, I don't understand how this code was a history code, it's been coming on and off for 2 months, plus my engine light was "on" when I took it there.

Any opinion on my situation? Is the dealership going through correct procedures for this issue?

Also, I've read a lot about the 9th generation corollas mainly 05/06 ECU going bad. If my ECU has been fine this long, would it be safe to say it was not one of the ones produced for the recall? Or are all of the 05/06's ECU for recall.

Thanks,

I think that code is the dreaded intake manifold defective code. Toyota dealer should have known this in his TSBs
I had this happen on my corrola a week ago and I replaced the intake manifold gasket to fix it. I think the TSB is posted in the first couple sections of this forum. It is very easy to replace yourself. I did it in a hour and the part cost $11.

There are two TSBs listed for that model year and code. One of which involves replacing an air/fuel ratio sensor (P/N# 89467-12010). The other involves replacing your ECM. List your VIN number and I'll be able to tell you if your car is part of the recall.

My honest assessment, the technician started with the cheapest fix, then went to the next. Seem like an intermittent condition, so I think the A/F will fix it. They sometimes get unreliable.

Good luck

i have this recurring p0171. i tried cleaning the MAF sensor but still p0171 shows up a week later. would you be able to show me step by step on how to replace the intake manifold (or is it the intake manofld gasket? I am not sure).

There is a thread for this problem on the very first page of this forum or you can http://wwwtoyotapart.com/M.I.LON...T-E-G045-07pdf.
