Question Corolla XRS engine rattle HELP

Hi guys,

I'm new here on the forum, quite a nice one I muss say ! I'm having issues with my 05 XRS about the engine sound. When running, the engine seems to make a huge rattle sound at around 2100 rpm...this happen when I start the car and it goes on idle in winter with high rev, then it goes on and on every single gear I change, always at around 2100 rpm...I do not get this sound when the car rpm is above or under...but if I keep the rev at 2100 when the car's running, I can hear that noise for undeterminated time...at first I tought that was something unusually that would stop someday (like 2 weeks ago)..but now its more frequent and louder than before. I then tough that could be the weather change with cold/hot, but its making the same sound no matter the condition.

Here's some info on my car :
year = 05
milleage : around 98 k

CAN SOME1 HELP ME PLZ !

Might be a loose exhaust heat shield that resonates at that RPM. When it is making the noise on cold start up, grab a long screwdriver and listen for the noise carefully.

Original serp belt? Can you record it and post it on here? The XRSs tend to have a rattle at 5K RPM.

It is definitely not normal behavior. My XRS has 110,000 KM and it idles very smoothly even when it is very cold.

The best case scenario is the injectors in your car are somewhat loud and the worst case scenario is you have some valve float. Somewhere in the middle could be release bearing.

Can you please answer these questions??

- Does the rattling sound come intermittently at 2100 rpm or always at 2100 rpm you can replicate the rattling sound??

- Are you getting that rattling sound under load when you are shifting through gears say from 1st to 2nd?? Is there any chance it resembles knocking sound??

- Did you ever notice if the noise goes away when you press the clutch at 2100 rpm while sitting idle??

- Did you accidently over-rev the car?? I mean, accidently downshifted at 8400 rpm instead of upshifting, you downshifted?? That could result in valve float and the symptoms for that are the ticking sound continuously at idle.

Sry guys I was away for a couple of weeks for business...

for the facts : the rattling sound always come at 2100 rpm..its not intermittently, every revs it does it. I never over-reved the car past 8400 rpm...and I managed to find out I could lower the noise when pushing the clutch on idle or making it slip a bit when changing gear. That being said, the noise still continue, but it does in fact make it less louder. I will try to record a vid and upload it this week. Thx again

Have you check the exhaust casket? My 06 XRS is now 136000 km and last year I hear grinding sound too, but not at a specific RPM, but it happen whenever I shift and release the clutch, and it happen at low speed (and low rpm)

Turns out it was the exhaust casket (the one sit between manifold and downpipe) Each time when a gear change, the engine will "hop" slightly forward because of change of torque. this put pressure on the casket and eventually it will wear out.....
