ECM Replacement Done, Have My Doubts & Such & air bag warning light issues
Guys N Gals,
Update from my prior thread, that is one is kinda muddied up so here is my update and concerns.
So, dropped my off my car this morning 8AM to my local toyota stealership. Told the guy I was there for the recall on the ECM etc etc. So go through the usual nonsense of taking my info, putting it in the computer, etc etc.
He says, okay, I am not sure we have the part as I changed my apt a few times but if all goes well you car will be ready in 1-1/2 hours. I say fine, and my wife and I go about our Saturday errands in my car.
9AM, got a call, car is all done, pick it up when you want. (1 hour in total).
Get the car back, they gave it a car wash which was nice.
Here is where things get a little interesting or my lack of knowledge on the ECM replacement creates doubt they did the replacement
#1 We still have the AIR BAG PROBLEM LIGHT illuminated on the guage cluster, bottom left. I was shocked they did not mention anything to me about this as I assumed they checked for codes before replacing the ECM, why, cause I had a stored P0741 code stored in memory from about a month or two ago and advised the guy that including the TSB about the P0741 which I handed him, which didn't make him very happy. Told me the warranty was UP, I told him up to 80K according to the sheet with regards to the ECM issue and the P0741.
#2 Both trip odometers were not changed to 0 and all her radio stations were still stored in the radio, like they never disconnected the battery before swapping the ECM's. Now maybe I'm just an older person, but I would assume to replace an ECM the would have to disconnect the battery for safety purposes or something along those lines.
#3 Her inspection was up for about a month, due to #1, they never mentioned a thing before or after getting the car back.
#4 The guy said the car would run rough until it relearned her driving ways, got the car back, ran exactly as it did before it went in, no roughness, no idle change, nothing.
Here is what it says on the work order
Labor & Parts - J# 1 76T0ZRECALL - A0J RECALL - PERFORMED RECALL
PARTS - 04000-47102 - SSP, COMPUTER, EN
I could be wrong but is it possible they said they did the replacement but actually did not? I am kinda basing this on #1 and #2 above.
Wouldn't you think something as important as an air bag system issue would be brought to my attention as well as the inspection, which I can't pass due to #1 above.
Update on air bag problem light on dash, bottom left of cluster
So, I decided to try something today, my wife started up her car, air bag problem light did not come on. I put on my seat belt and she did hers, no light came up, put the car in D, no light, she pulls forward a few feet and turn the steering wheel to the left, bam, air bag problem light comes up? Any hints or help on this, They want a hundred or so dollars just to check the system, and I have a feeling it's gonna be hundreds more to fix. Car only has 63K miles, ugh. Could this be covered under some safety warrant or something??? (this experiment was done twice with the same results)
Thanks and interested in all comments on my upate. Sorry for the long winded post.

When I had my ECU unit replaced back in Oct 09 I do remember my radio being reset when I got the car back.
I pulled out my old invoice and this is what Toyota wrote down.

I hope they just didn't wash your car for you. Was your check engine light on like mine when the ECU went haywire?

Well, you invoice def shows something different than mine, not sure what that means.
Check engine light was not on, but the air bag warning light was on (meaning malfunction of the system) and I know 100% there was or still is a P0741 cel code stored.
I'll wait to hear from others as well but I honestly have a sneaking suspicion they did jack shit to my wifes car.
If they did great, if not, I still have the P0741 code to deal with (which is under warranty but he said it wasn't) and the damn air bag system malfunction, which is gonna cost me an arm and leg to fix. Just to get it diagnosed I think is over $100+
With only 63+k on the car, an air bag system issue is pretty pathetic with no accidents and well maintained car.

Does the part number on the invoice match the sticker on the ECU? They did not disconnect my battery when I got the new ECU under the recall.
I will check that when I get a free moment and it warms up a tad, hopefully in the next few days.
With regards to disconnecting the battery, that is a good sign that maybe they did replace it (meaning they might not always do that). I assumed when any work is done on the electrical system including ECM's they disconnect the battery.
Mikered: I forgot about my original post and saw where you advised to check the wiring and connectors under the drivers seat, does this also hold true for pass seat as well?
Also found another thread from another member with the identical issues and it was the clock spring, is this something that normally craps out at 60+K?
If the wiring check does not yeild anything, gonna have to take the plunge and have a dealer check it and hopefully not get ripped off, ugh.

That's it, is this a new one or original, if it were that simple I would have noted the original numbers before it went in.
As far as the under the seats, all clips for the SRS system are tight and snug. So I have no choice but to have a toyota stealership diagnose it, what a freakin shame, just pouring money out the door, ugh.

^^ Great so at least the ECM replacement issue is done with, FOR NOW, hahaha, let's see how long the replacements last.
Now, onto the air bag diagnosis, I will call up the local stealerships and find out how much each charges to do the diagnosis, from my research online, ppl pay different amounts for this diagnosis, I find that quite odd. Should be a set diagnosis fee from Toyota.
I don't want to assume anything with this issue as until it's checked who knows for sure, either way it's gonna cost me quite a bit regardless as anything with the SRS system is never cheap to fix, with 63K miles on the car, way to soon to have problems likes this. Shame.
Once that is done, I will get it checked and report back.
Oh, and thanks for always chiming in, appreciated it

Update: everything has been well since the new ECM was put in a few weeks ago, give or take.
My wife was driving to work today and BAM CEL light comes back on. Will take it to autozone to get the code and report back.
Also, gonna have the airbag malfunction light diagnosed and use my car insurance extended warranty to hopefully get that fixed.
I guess my question for now is, shouldn't air bag issues be covered under safety equipment warranty like seat belts and such. She only has 65K on the car and it just passed 5 years old.
I read alot about clock springs being a major problem for the 05 rolla, but they should fix that since it has to do with the safety systems on the car, no?
Let's see what the new CEL is, I can't win, fix one thing, another comes up.
