2004 Corolla idles high, and makes a grinding noise in front.

Hi guys my wife has a 2004 Toyota Corolla Type S with like 85k miles on it. Recently it has been making a like kind of grinding noise when driving in front, and when you start the car in the winter it idles high like close to 3k rpms. Any ideas on what may be the problem of this, thanks.

Does this noise occur at idle only? Does it go away when warmed up? How would you describe the grinding noise? Chirping, banging, squealing? Does the noise come from the engine or the wheels?

Close to 3K RPM at start up is pretty high in winter, probably a bit too high. Did it go that high last winter? Maybe your throttle body and idle air control valve need a carbon cleaning.

The grinding is coming from the wheels may it be the rotors. Because i know they haven't been replaced in a long time only the pads have. how do i go by cleaning the throttle body and or idle air control valve please, sorry i'm a noob

With 85K on original rotors, you might need new pads or have the pads turned by a mechanic, although the rotors should have been turned when you got new pads.

To clean the TB and IACV, you have to remove the large black hose that comes from the air filter housing and goes into the engine. It takes a number 3 Phillips screwdriver. Have someone step on the gas pedal while you spray sensor safe throttle body cleaner (not carb cleaner) down the TB and the little diamond port located in the TB, which is your IACV. Make sure the car is off and the straw from the can does not go into your intake. Let it sit for 10 min and attempt to start your car, it wont start on the first try and when it does start, it will be rough. White smoke may even come out the exhaust. Let it idle for a few min and drive it around the block. Also read the directions on the can so you do not spray too much. I think a 1/4 of the can will be sufficient.
