According to Crutchfield, mounting aftermarket 6x9s takes drilling new mounting holes. Poking around online a while back, I read a guy's blog about how he mounted 6x9s in his and all it took was an afternoon of taking the rear deck apart and drilling screw holes for the new speakers.

Doesn't sound terribly complicated, as long as you can lay in your trunk to drill the new holes.

@mikered30 Thanks, that's the page I remember.

One thing worth noting is that you should avoid using wire nuts as the creator of that page did. Generally an unreliable way to connect wires. Most installation parts manufacturers will make a speaker adapter plug that you can either solder or crimp so you won't have to cut off the factory plug ends. Much cleaner and easier to undo if you decide to sell the car and put the factory speakers back in.

Reading some of this guy's other tutorials at http://www.net4free.org/Other/nshahzad/ ...

He's nothing if not creative, but (whenever he wrote these) he needed a little technical refinement.

Thanks for the reply, but in my corolla a after market 6x9 will have gaps around it if you just drill some holes. I dont want the gaps! Like I said I made a template the first time I installed x9's but it was made of wood and cracked, I was looking for something thinner and more durable than wood. I guess i'll be off to home depot to get some sheet metal and cutting gear.

If you mount it solidly to the newly-drilled holes, gaps won't matter.
