2008 Ce has rough idle when cold

I have noticed for a while that when the car starts up in the morning it smells like its reallly running rich. Now I know this is the case with most cars when cold but our car really smells strong. My wife was complaining that it ran rough until it warms up in the morning. Well this morning I had the car and sure enough at the first red light I stopped at after startup it felt as though the car was going to cut out...but it didn't. Now I know 2008's were recalled for rough idle and stalling but apparently my cars vin is not included in the recall, and it only does it when the engine is cold. Any thoughts?

Possible bad intake manifold gasket, which is is common in the cold for the 9th gen corollas. This gasket is on back order in Canada. To confirm, spray the intake manifold area with carb cleaner during cold startup and listen for engine response. Any CEL?

No, there isn't a CEL, wouldn't an intake gasket problem trigger one?
