Why not reuse the oil drain gasket?

Why do some feel it is necessary to use a new oil drain plug gasket?

maybe they're paranoid and just want peace of mind. I, though, have been reusing the factory one for the past 70k miles. i think im gonna get a new one though on my next oil change.

Have 142K on mine and switched to a magnetic at 70K. been using it ever since, it's a permanent fixed washer anyway, you have to be careful with your tranny drain plug the gasket can come off just by setting it down, it fell off on me and I didn't know it and it started leaking, found the old gasket on the ground days later!

The gasket can deform over time with repeated torquing/untorquing (especially when you put different amounts of torque on it) and create an uneven sealing surface.

I haven't had one for 30k. I don't over torque it (or use a torque wrench) but mine is completely dry from top to bottom (except around the intake manifold) haven't gotten around to replacing the gasket yet.

The problem with the copper crush gasket is after years of reuse, it is crush to the thickness of aluminium foil. I have to cut a few of drain plugs before and copper gasket are recommaned for one-time use anyways. I use nylon/plastic gasket and only replace them if they leak or cracked. Never like the rubber ones.

i think the oem washer can be used for more than 100K miles. it's aluminum with a black type paper on both ends. my experience is i've worked on a 05 camry since new and it's on its original gasket. now at 125k miles. i've done every oil change on that car. i've also done oil changes on a 07 corolla since new and now it's at 50k miles. if you let different people work on the car then i suggest getting a new washer every time. some people will over torque it.

Because they are cheap enough not to force to make last. The gasket deforms when you torque the drain plug on it. It's a one time use item. Theres no sense in forcing it to do more than it should. Cut corners on expensive items...not ones that cost less than a buck.
